I bought the craziest whisky this weekend.
Holy crap. I bought this bottle of The Macallan Cask Strength Whisky for my brother-in-law for Christmas. Of course, no sooner did I get it home than I cracked it open for a
sample.
I've had a few different varities of The Macallan in the past, and I am quite a fan, but this was like nothing else. First off, it's fucking strong.
But it also has the most robust flavors I've ever experienced in a spirit. Seriously, my mouth was overwhelmed and my brain couldn't even comprehend
all of the flavors that were swirling around at once. I guess it has something to do with a step of the distillation process that was intentionally
skipped.
If you are a whisky fan, I highly recommend looking into giving this a try.

This whisky is bottled at 58.6% alcohol by volume (117.2-proof in the USA), and that's not all, folks: This bottling hasn't been chill-filtered. What
does that mean to you? If whisky isn't chilled, then filtered, before bottling, the producer runs the risk of it becoming cloudy if it gets too
cold?there's nothing wrong with the product, but since most consumers don't know that, the whisky guys play at being safe rather than sorry.
At high proof, though, the risk of what's known in the trade as a "chill haze," gets less and less, and at almost 60% abv, the risk is almost nil, so
the good folk at The Macallan weren't taking too much of a risk when they issued this bottling, but by not chill-filtering, the company is offering
more flavor in the bottle. The fact is, that the substances removed by chill-filtration are flavorful compounds, so let's have more bottlings such as
this one. What's that? What did it taste like? We'll tell you.
The Macallan Cask Strength, at bottle-proof, is extremely spicy, with predominant cinnamon/raisin aromas, a silky/buttery texture, and a palate that
follows the nose, but here we found some honey notes, too. The finish? It goes on for ever. With a little spring water, the scotch gets even spicier,
and far more complex. We'll give it a rating of 96?highly recommended.
We should add one more fact about this bottling, though, and it's something that not many people take into consideration when purchasing high-proof
spirits: If you start off with a 750-ml bottle of this whisky, and add enough spring water to bring it down to 40% alcohol by volume (abv)?the proof
at which most spirits are bottled?you'll end up with 1.098.75 liters of The Macallan Cask Strength. For around $50 (we've seen it advertised for
less), we figure this is quite a bargain.
For those of you who, like us, still think in ounces:
750 ml = 25.3605 ounces
1.09875 liters = 37.1531 ounces, or 1.161 quarts.
And since we still have our palm-top handy:
At $50 per bottle, you're paying $1.9712 per undiluted ounce, and $1.3458 per ounce at 40% abv.

you should be able to find it for under $50. i paid $55 for the holiday gift box that included a The Macallan flask and two shot glasses. and yes, i
did go back and by my brother-in-law his own gift box.
i'm always cautious when recommending expensive items to people (i guess really, this is about average for scotch, though), so maybe check out some of
your local bars to see if they have it first. in NYC, you'd probably spend $15 for a single glass, but that's better than $50 for a bottle if you
don't like it.
my favorite scotch is lagavulin. it's got a great peat-smoke flavor that i love, and is really quite smooth. the macallan cs definitely says hello
on the way down. plus the depth of the flavors is amazing, and it stays with you for quite some time.

I wish they made a non-alcoholic version, I'd definetly give it a try ... thats the only bad thing about being straight-edge, missing all those tastes
... a fresh bottle of corona, a glass of bombay saphire on the rocks ... that burn a shot of rum gives you ... oh well, I'm better off without it.

The best I have had was johnny walker blue - double shot. Jamesons- types not sure which ones though? and Knobb whiskey. All good and pricey.

i had the jameson 18 year when i was in texas.
actually the guy who owned this small irish pub in austin gave me a glass for free being i was in town and he had spent some time there when he first
came to america from ireland. so much different than the regular 7 year. the 12 year is also good. the price seems to go up every year. i think the 12
is up to around $40 a fifth now. a friend of mine had been down in mississippi a couple of years ago and i forget what it was he saw. it was in a
locked glass case . i think it was called louis the 8th or somethin and was like $300 a shot. also he had mentioned johny walker blue label. his boss
is very wealthy and a conosuer of such things. i never started o enjoy whiskey until recently. always a fan of tequilla. which brings me to mention,
being some of you are closer to the source, could you reccommend some good tequilla for me and the crew for the holidays? it would be mmuch
appreciated, as i am very tired of cuervo.
