Incoporate your business or look into becoming an LLC...that way if your shit goes belly up, your personal assets can't be seized and your personal money can't be touched.

Put as much of your profit as possible back into the business, never neglect your overhead and take it slow. Don't get ahead of yourself and try to stay out of debt as much as possible.

limited liablility coporation
if you are going into a business that will require large amounts of loans or credit, do it.

we have been in business for ourselves for going on 4 years this next month....

it's either feast or famine, because we never know when the work is coming, or from who... this and the long hours are the only downside

but you can not even be remotly lazy and run your own business...
and be successful enough not to work a day job.

it is hard work but worth it....find your niche and stick to it

Also, google business plans and read through some, then create one of your own, even if you dont need a loan. It will help you to remain focused on your objectives. I just finished Intro to business last semester and learned a shitload of good info.

i never established an actual business. my business is not the sort of thing that includes a lot of liability, and my equipment is limited to a few computers. plus the annual cost of the llc and filing a seperate tax return isn't worth it. not that it's that much, but still.

and yeah, keep all your reciepts. my main expenses include a portion of my rent for a home office, cell phone, internet connection, transportaion (cabs, trains & flights), and entertainment (dinner out with clients). i also try to buy at least one large piece of hardware every year.

If I fail math, there goes my chance at a good job and a happy life full of hard work.
