I've got an old Marty Robbins album called "Gunfighter Ballads and Trail Songs" that kicks ass. He looks like he's about 20 years old. But aside from Johnny Cash I don't know a lot country.

Well, its this place where nobody works, and the pigs don\'t give you any shit. Everyone smokes weed and gets drunk all day. Its a place where cunts like me and you can truly take it easy and relax. Know what I mean?

as far as the old timers go,Merle Haggard is my favorite...I think his "Back to the Barrooms" album is the best country (drinking) album ever.
You also need to check out Billy Joe Shaver & Dale Watson.
and if you like the hellraisin outlaw stuff, pick up Hank III's new album "Straight to Hell"....fuckin great. WWW.HANK3.COM

I agree on the Merle Haggard, that man rules. Another favorite who runs along similar lines to Hank Sr. is Ernest Tubb, that shit is awesome. "Drivin' nails in my coffin over you..."

Early Lefty frizell is great, he seems to be known mostly for "saginaw, michigan" but he's got lots of stuff that outshines that song.
Buck Owens and the Buckaroos, again stick to the early stuff.
For really old-school, check out some Jimmie Rodgers-20s/30s yodelling railroad songs, good stuff. For other recomendations I'll throw out Hank Snow, Hank Thompson, Faron Young, George Jones (particularly the mercury recordings), Kittie Wells, Doc Watson (more folk/bluegrass, definately worth checking out), Leon Redbone's "No regrets" album is country based and one of my favorite albums of any genre. Not much that compares to Hank though.

Man I can't wait to go to my parents' house and go rootin' around in my dad's record collection... he's got some great country albums, and some 45s of his country band the Good Life.

I think the song that got me hooked on Merle was Momma tried...
