country music

a response in another thread made me start this

i think its easy to say "i hate all country"
but the country you are thinking of is the shits
its like saying green day is a punk band

there is so much killer country stuff out there from back in the day and some from now
you just have to get over what you THINK its all about and listen for what it is

the similarities between punk rock and country are striking
so much in common

give something new a chance
give shitty metal/core or whatever a break for 5 mins and expand yourselves

Post up some links to "good country" and I would check it out. I give things a chance, I just have a really picky ear.

I'm sure it's full of heart and guts, but the sound it's delievered with has yet to please me. Like I said, I am willing to give anything a couple listens.

I used to say I hate all country. Then I discovered Johnny Cash and others like him. I don't own much but I like some of the older outlaw country stuff. It's actually pretty cool if you give it a chance.

I used to associate country music with all the mainstream shit. From Dooly Partom to Garth Brooks to Toby Keith. Basically, all the shitty crap. "Outlaw" country is fucking cool.

One of my friends loves newer country, but hates the older stuff. I give him so much shit for it, and to his girlfriend for introducing him to the newer country.

Anyhow, I don't listen to either really, and I do have to say it's because the stuff that's played on the radio is garbage. The same holds true for most stuff played on the radio. So I'd appreciate some names/groups to look into. I try to have an open mind.

Sirius has a channel called Outlaw Country that plays nothing but Merle Haggard, Johnny Cash, David Allan Coe, etc...plus they throw in Skynyrd and ZZ Top.

as i got older, i learned to appreciate country more. maybe it was that the older i got, the more terrible shit i dealt with and somehow i fealt i could relate to the artists. ive heard tons of good country style in the last few years. its not all pick up truck commercials and such. and like hardcore / metal and so on, there is allot of artists that gay up the country style.. no hardore band could ever make me feel like i have a hole in my chest the way some of that stuff does.
like my pal bradley used to say, punk and country are kissing cousins. some of it comes from the same place...

merle haggard http://www.myspace.com/merlehaggardaz
waylon jennings http://www.myspace.com/stormsneverlast
george jones http://www.myspace.com/gerogejones4
wayne hancock http://www.myspace.com/waynehancock

My opinion..... I don't like it at all. And to quote the starting of this thread...

"i think its easy to say "i hate all country"
but the country you are thinking of is the shits"

To me it is all shit. I have heard this style of country before, just checked it all out again and I don't feel this will ever be my cup of tea. Everyone has varied tastes, and this is not one of mine.

I have never really checked into blues. From what I have heard it hasn't really sparked my interests though.

had this tape. it was kinda weird. it was recorded in prisons in the south back in say the 40s and 50s. just these old black inmates with a guitar in their cells playin their blues. it was haunting to say the least. i forget the name of that one.
i have allot of blues stuff, i just havent played it in a while. the last job i had, i was fortunate to work with a guy who turned me onto a bunch of different stuff. i used to copy everythin he brang in. same man who turned me onto irish whiskey.

I hope anyone that's naysaying Merle doesn't like Forced Reality's cover of Mama Tried... I've loved that song forever, and to have it all streetpunked out is just golden.

I grew up on this shit. I mentioned it before in a previous thread, but man, it's good to be able to share this with my dad now after all these years. He doesn't feel the hardcore punk and oi stuff so much... I'm sure he can come to a point where he appreciates that it comes from the same place though. My kid is probably going to hate hardcore, haha.

CMT had a show on the other night called "Outlaws 2005" that had Toby Keith(outlaw my ass), playing with Merle and David Allen Coe(have you guys seen what he looks like these days? Dude was wearing pink All-Stars with bright green laces and had a bit of his hair dyed like a bright red and parts of his beard which was braided down to the middle of his chest... all in all, he looked like a biker slob with a certain degree of punk flair haha). It was a pretty good show except for their new so-called "outlaws."

He's no outlaw.
