Should Prince Harry go to the front lines?

I guess there is some concern that if he is sent to active duty in Iraq, that he and his unit (come on, you know what i mean!) will be targeted specifically?

a warranted concern or not? should he still go if allowed?

------
Britain's Prince Harry may be kept from action
Mon Apr 24, 7:41 AM ET

LONDON (Reuters) - Britain's Prince Harry, an army officer and third in line to the throne, may be shielded from the frontline if his unit is sent to war, the Ministry of Defense said on Monday.

Harry's deployment or continuing presence in a conflict zone might be brought into question if the prince, who graduated as an army officer this month, were to become a specific target, the ministry said.

There is a tradition of British royals serving in the armed forces. Harry's uncle, the Duke of York, flew a helicopter in the Falkland's War in 1982 and his great-grandfather King George VI saw action in World War One.

Harry, 21, who is in the infantry and is training to command 11 men and four light tanks in an armed reconnaissance unit, has insisted he wants a frontline role.

However, a ministry spokeswoman said his role would have to be carefully monitored.

"The intention is that Prince Harry will undertake the fullest range of deployments, both operational and training," a ministry spokeswoman said.

"But on occasions there may be some circumstances where his overt presence might attract additional attention that could increase the potential risk to those he commands or himself," she said.

Harry, whose mother Princess Diana died in a Paris car crash when he was 12, is a Second Lieutenant in the Household Cavalry. The regiment is due to go to Iraq next year and British soldiers are also deployed in Afghanistan.

Harry, once dubbed a wild child for underage drink and drug antics, made it clear in an interview to mark his 21st birthday this year that he would not shy away from action and the ministry stressed that he joined to become an "operational soldier."

"There is no way I am going to put myself through Sandhurst (military academy) and then sit on my arse back home while my boys are out fighting for their country," he said.

Harry is the younger son of Britain's Prince Charles, the heir to the British throne.

He'll be like Elvis. Never see the action but they will work it like he was. Since he went into the military I say yes. Thats why you join. However he is royalty and he will be treated like such. thats just he way politcs work. They are grooming him for his political future.

yup... he should go, but even if he is sent he will be treated like a celebrity like Clevo said. I think its fucked up, if a celebrity wants to join up then they should be treated like everyone else, but it will never happen with a highprofile celeb.

If they are nervous about his 'unit' being targeted then they should just not say where hes being sent. Theres tons of top secret millitary info I'm sure they could keep that at least somewhat under wraps.

I agree too, but if they join they should do whatever is expected of everyone else.

Agreed. I don't wish harm on anyone but if he's in the service he needs to be like all the rest. Easy for me to say infront of my computer screen too, I know.

I think that "The Royal Family" lose all of it's privledges as well. I'd like to see the same for the Bush family.

according to the article, it's not that he doesn't want to go. it's the military that doesn't want him there (should his unit be selected).

I say fuck him and the entire royal family. I'm sick of seeing poor men fighting a rich man's war. I've got a friend in the USMC who's shipping out in less than a month for training, then by the end of August he'll be in the sand. If only this fucking cracker could go in his place, I'd rest a little easier.

I don't think the issue is his willingness. Would you want to be in his squad knowing every jihadi in the Middle East is after his head? Its not just his security, its the security of everyone within a 100 metre radius of him.
