i know how to do it in vlc player. if you don't have it yet, get it, it plays nearly anything. http://www.videolan.org

what type of file(s) are the subtitles by the way?

edit: wait, are you trying to merge them with the movie file or something? for viewing the movie that's not necessary but if you want to do that you'll have to re-encode the movie with the subtitles. which causes quality loss

ok, i got the dutch version of vlc so i'm not sure what all the tabs are called in english.
the third tab from the left should be called something like "configuration". in that tab go to preferences, then to video, then click on subtitles/osd. there should be a box with "use file with subtitles" next to it and an option to browse for the file. find the .srt file and click ok.
if the movie was already playing, click stop and then play again.

a shortcut to go to preferences is ctrl-s

that works great for vlc man. thanks muchly for the help. i figured it out for the other players as well. you have to change the name of the subs file to the same as the video (while remembering to keep the .srt extension!!!!) and install vobsub and it opens automatically with the movie. finally!!!! this is the second movie i havent been able to watch because of this. kickass.
