DUI suspect blamed in fatal crash
Cops: Man fled traffic stop, crashed into woman?s car
Stephen Szucs
The Chronicle-Telegram
AMHERST ? Police say a man suspected of driving drunk fled after a traffic stop and killed a Grafton woman when his truck plowed into her car in an
intersection early Saturday morning.
Sheila J. Pierce, 51, of Grafton, died instantly when the red Ford Ranger driven by Phillip Stern II ran a red light and crashed into the passenger
side of her vehicle shortly after 1 a.m. at Cooper Foster Park Road and Leavitt Road.
Police had pulled Stern over before the crash after an officer saw his truck swerve over the center line three times on North Main Street in Amherst.
Stern, 33, of Lorain, appeared to be intoxicated and refused to roll down his window or exit his truck when officers asked him, said Amherst police
Lt. Joseph Kucirek.
Stern drove away and police chased him, a pursuit that ended when Stern?s truck slammed into the Pontiac Grand-Am driven by Pierce.
Coroner Paul Matus said Pierce died instantly from neck and chest injuries suffered during the crash. He was unsure whether Pierce was wearing her
seatbelt.
Amherst firefighters were called to extricate both drivers. Stern was transported to Community Health Partners in Lorain before being flown by
helicopter to MetroHealth Medical Center in Cleveland, according to police.
Stern was listed in fair condition Saturday afternoon. By Saturday night, the hospital did not list him as a patient.
Police are still trying to determine how fast Stern?s vehicle was traveling when the accident occurred, and charges against Stern are pending
following toxicology results and the conclusion of the investigation.
?This is a very unfortunate situation,? Kucirek said. ?Just senseless.?
Stern faced a previous DUI charge in 2003, according to court records, and also fled from police in 1989, Kucirek said.
Stern and Pierce were the only people in their vehicles.
Pierce?s family declined to comment Saturday

He usually is walking/stumbling home from the bar EVERY FUCKING NIGHT down my street. His Dad is the same fucking way. In fact we used to always half
jokingly say Stern would would eventually kill himself by brinking. Its unfortunate it wasn't him and it had to be an innocent woman. Fucking loser.

Seriously this guy does nothing but drink. He sold morgages by day part time and still lived at home with this parents. He drank all night long every
night. He for the most part fell asleep every evening at the bar. Then walked home. I know someone that went to refinance their home and hooked up
with him. They said he was shaking the whole time but did his job well. If you ever seen LEAVING LAS VEGAS with Nicolas Cage that was him. He was only
even more retarded.
