Good call on Bob Marley, although Legend is probably the worst place to start with. It's just a "greatest hits" comp, and probably not even the best
one. Having said that, you can't go wrong with Bob Marley.

actually the earliest wailers singles were on island records, the early 60's ska era stuff. trojan was a british company, didn't get goin till 67/68
during the skinhead reggae era. they've reissued alot of material from the ska and rocksteady eras but they weren't going then. high quality label for
sure and it's nice to see all the vaults being emptied since they got bought out in the late nineties. legend is an ok starting point to get familiar
with the man, but there's alot better stuff if you do a little digging around. that being said, the notion that reggae begins and ends with bob marley
is a constant pet peeve of mine. it does alot of disservice to people like phyllis dillon, the kingstonians, heptones, dandy livingstone, etc.

yea there's definately alot of great studio 1 reissues out there as well. similar material as island was a uk label and the stuff came out in jamaica
on coxsone/studio 1 as well as endless amounts of other labels like treasure isle, beverlys, dice etc. generally if something was a big hit in
jamaica, it would be issued in the uk. this was especially done a few years later during the early reggae era. Labels like Pama and Trojan (and their
various subsidiaries like Downtown) put out a ton of stuff in the UK, eventually alot of it actually produced there. As to what came out on what label
exclusively, that's not always so easy. The jamaican record industry was about as shady as it gets.

remember who else.

If you're looking for early ska, "Tougher Than Tough" is a great Trojan comp.

Let's see, I picked up a few things while I was in Denver....
On Friday I saw The Hudson Falcons and since I have all their albums I just picked up the Banded Together To Fight Hard Times compilation. I've been
meaning to get that and I like it even more than I thought I would. I also hit up a couple of great record stores while I was there, Wax Trax and then
Twist & Shout. I got the new album from Reducers SF, which is fuckin' top notch as always, and I picked up Rumblefist by The Bullys, but that hasn't
grabbed me quite as much as I hoped. I also got Fear City from HiFi And The Roadburners, that record is fucking great, I'm gonna hafta pick up the
rest of their shit. Then I got ahold of a nice gatefold cover vinyl cersion of The Slumlords new On The Stremph! album, but I haven't gotten a chance
to throw it on the turntable yet. I got home on Monday and got my Thorp/SGR sale order in. I got My Riot from The Disasters and I think it's their
best by far, Sugar Daddie's Hell Or High Water and that is so much better than I expected, and The Generators' Winter Of Discontent which really isn't
grabbing me yet. Then yesterday I swung by the local shop and picked up the new Street Dogs album, Fading American Dream, which is every bit as good
as I expected.
