A salute to Wesley Autrey

Voodoo's post reminded me that I meant to put something up about this guy.

You've probably heard about it on the news, but basically... this guy had a siezure on a NYC subway platform and falls onto the tracks. Mr. Autrey left his two young daughters on the platorm, and jumped down to help the guy as a train was approaching the station. Turns out he couldn't lift him up out of the tracks in time, so as the train entered the station, Mr. Autrey jumped on top of the guy and held him down sa the train passed over top of them.

They were laying in what is essentially a drainage ditch between the two main rails. Keep in mind there's also a third rail down there, which is electrified (we've all seen Beat Street, right?). Aparently, those ditches vary in depth from 18" to 24", and the one in that station happened to be about 22".

Man Is Rescued by Stranger on Subway Tracks

By CARA BUCKLEY
Published: January 3, 2007

It was every subway rider?s nightmare, times two.

Who has ridden along New York?s 656 miles of subway lines and not wondered: ?What if I fell to the tracks as a train came in? What would I do??

And who has not thought: ?What if someone else fell? Would I jump to the rescue??

Wesley Autrey, a 50-year-old construction worker and Navy veteran, faced both those questions in a flashing instant yesterday, and got his answers almost as quickly.

Mr. Autrey was waiting for the downtown local at 137th Street and Broadway in Manhattan around 12:45 p.m. He was taking his two daughters, Syshe, 4, and Shuqui, 6, home before work.

Nearby, a man collapsed, his body convulsing. Mr. Autrey and two women rushed to help, he said. The man, Cameron Hollopeter, 20, managed to get up, but then stumbled to the platform edge and fell to the tracks, between the two rails.

The headlights of the No. 1 train appeared. ?I had to make a split decision,? Mr. Autrey said.

So he made one, and leapt.

Mr. Autrey lay on Mr. Hollopeter, his heart pounding, pressing him down in a space roughly a foot deep. The train?s brakes screeched, but it could not stop in time.

Five cars rolled overhead before the train stopped, the cars passing inches from his head, smudging his blue knit cap with grease. Mr. Autrey heard onlookers? screams. ?We?re O.K. down here,? he yelled, ?but I?ve got two daughters up there. Let them know their father?s O.K.? He heard cries of wonder, and applause.

Power was cut, and workers got them out. Mr. Hollopeter, a student at the New York Film Academy, was taken to St. Luke?s-Roosevelt Hospital Center. He had only bumps and bruises, said his grandfather, Jeff Friedman. The police said it appeared that Mr. Hollopeter had suffered a seizure.

Mr. Autrey refused medical help, because, he said, nothing was wrong. He did visit Mr. Hollopeter in the hospital before heading to his night shift. ?I don?t feel like I did something spectacular; I just saw someone who needed help,? Mr. Autrey said. ?I did what I felt was right.?

Dude was on Letterman last night. He was awesome.
"All that happened to me was that my blue hat got dirty."

He said that even though the conductor saw people on the tracks and threw on the brakes immediately, that five cars still passed over them before the train came to a stop. Then they were stuck down there for over 30 minutes while the MTA cut power to the third rail then moved the train out.

I woulda been most afraid of that last part. Like, "look I just got ran over by a train and survived. Don't fuck up while backing this thing up and take my head off!"

why can't a guy like that get a million dollars. Here he is working some shitty night shift when he leaps down and saves this guys life. He had his kids there and didn't think twice about leaving them on the platform to save this other dude.

There is good in this world still.

There's a great place waiting for that guy when he passes on. Good for him for helping someone else for no reason other then they were in trouble. This is a true hero.

Agreed. His daughters learned an important lesson that day as well, it's good to help others even if they're strangers.

opie and anthony (which i only listen to on regular radio repeats when i have to) just kept going on saying that once the press dies down about him, he's going to recreate this event and end up accidentally killing people just to regain his glory. i know its stupid radio but the guy deserves the good attention that he's getting

If Dopie and Cunthony understood anything about true heroics they'd understand that glory means fuck all.

This guy has been nicknamed "Subway Superman". This couldn't be more appropriate.

Also, if you look at his hat in the picture that BD posted,
the dirt on it is grease from the train.

I give all my respect to this that. What he did took more balls then most people will ever have. And the fact that he's passing it off as nothing important means a lot. He's not acting like some glorified hero. Went right back to work. That film student must worship this guy. I know I would if I were him.
