mandatory listening...

JONNY STEVENS s/t solo album
http://www.myspace.com/jonnystevensmusic

got this in the mail the other day. thanks, jonny.

i've been listening to hardcore almost exclusively for the past several month, so this is a nice change of pace. sounds great, and is pretty relaxing for a guy like me. i foresee it getting a lot of play while in the car with the family.

If I fail math, there goes my chance at a good job and a happy life full of hard work.

BRAINWHACK

As you may have guessed, this came to my attention thanks to Boycott.

I'm really into this cd. At eight and a half minutes for nine tracks, it's kinda brief, but it's hyper. Not hyper in a 'kick down doors toughguy' kinda way, but more of a 'run real fast and crash into people' kinda way. I guess you'd classify it as hardcore punk; it's definitely got aspects of both. The feeling it gives me is similar to the one I get when I listen to The Bad Vibes. Vocalist reminds me a little of Dave Byrd from Striking Distance and Set To Explode. Two tracks from this record are on their myspace page.

SET TO EXPLODE

Musically, it reminds me of Black Flag.
Vocally, it reminds me of, well, Striking Distance.

I remember when Jonny was first talking about doing his solo stuff on this board and then checking out the recordings he linked up back then and being anxious to hear the final product. As interested as I was back then, I have to say that I am blown away with how well it all came out, at least judging by the tracks on myspace. Good fuckin' stuff there, Jonny! I'll be interested in finding the CD when it gets released.
