U.S. Postal Service announces STAR WARS stamps

The U.S. Postal Service revealed previews Wednesday for stamps commemorating the 30th anniversary of the original Star Wars movies.

On March 16 about 400 mailboxes that resemble R2-D2 from Stars Wars were scattered across the 200 U.S. cities, according to a U.S. Postal Service press release.

The R2-D2 mailboxes were a prelude to Wednesday's unveiling.

Sean Johnson, an employee at the Cedar City Post Office, said the Star Wars promotion will not be coming to Cedar City.

"The district decides where certain promotions will come to, and Cedar City is not involved in this one," he said.

If anyone is interested in receiving any of the Star Wars memorabilia, the post office can order it for them, Johnson said.

Most of Cedar City is unsure of this current promotion said Bruce W. Barclay, Mail Services and Post Office Manager at the Sharwan Smith Center.

"I haven't had a lot of time to look into the promotion myself," he said.

People can get more information about the promotion at www.usps.com, Barclay said.

Kelly Lid, academic college adviser, said the new stamp should be interesting.

"I guess I am not the type of person who gets excited over these sort of things," she said. "I do like options for stamps though, and I know some people who will get pretty excited about this."

Jayme Stone, a sophomore English major from Spanish Fork, is excited for the new stamps.

"I love new stamps," he said. "I am not even a huge fan of Star Wars, but I would buy a bunch of R2-D2 stamps to send to my friends."

These sci-fi themed mailboxes are only temporary, according to the press release.

Bri Buckley, a senior theatre arts major from Glendale, Calif., said the mailboxes should be kept longer.

"I think these mailboxes are pretty cool," she said. "They can be functional and fun to look at during the same time."

Hillary White, a freshman athletic training major from Centerville, said she would like to have her own R2-D2 mailbox.

"I would love to have an R2-D2 mailbox," she said. "If I could, I would special-order one and I would use it."

A U.S. postal box in Salt Lake City, decorated as the Star Wars character R2-D2, advertises for a new set of stamps.

I just saw one of these mailboxes the other day and went nuts... I still have a pic of it on my phone.

I will certainly stock up on these stamps when they come out.

I haven't seen a mailbox yet, and I've been looking for 2 weeks. I'll be stocking up on the stamps AND the special Express Mail envelopes. I voted on the website the set up for which stamp gets an entire sheet of its own... I went with Darth Vader. He's the most iconic of the lot.

Personally I'm more hyped for the Forever stamp. Never got into Star Wars.

That'd be a federal crime wouldn't it? The guy that puts one on Ebay is going to be in some deep shit.

I remember seeing this collector thing on the History Channel and they had this guy who pretty much owns every toy, collectible, etc, ever made for Star Wars. Crazy.

never got that into star wars either.

also, be careful with those forever stamps...
they're going on sale at the new rate, 41 cents or whatever. and while the post office is sure to raise rates again in a few years, you could most likely make more money putting your stamp investment cash in a high-yield savings account than you would in savings by buying up a bunch of stamps. the time to buy these is right before they raise rates NEXT time.

If I fail math, there goes my chance at a good job and a happy life full of hard work.

i still prefer the original trilogy.
the newer 3 were cool, but you know...
great story and filming, but the original trilogy is what i grew up on.
that opening scene in a new hope took me the first time i saw it.
