commercialism, capitalism, ebay and me

i have this silkscreened poster. i bought it in 1997 for $35 cause i thought it looked cool. framed it and hung it on the wall. a few years later, the guy who did the poster started blowing up, and his work was everywhere. on clothing items from urban outiftters to macys. that turned me off, so i took down the poster.

yesterday, i'm tooin' around ebay, and i see the exact same poster just sold for $750. i still like the poster, but i also still dislike the fact that his work so common. admittedly, part of me likes it even more now that it's worth so much. and obviously, i have his increased popularity to thank for that increased valuation.

i planend to hang it in my basement once it's finished, but i'd rather have the cash. BUT... what if the value of his stuff continues to go up? should i sell it now, or sit on it in hopes that prices keep going up? i dunno. i didn't buy it as an investment. if i was at the casino, i'd probably take my money and leave the table.

If I fail math, there goes my chance at a good job and a happy life full of hard work.

sell sell sell

as long as he is still producing new works he is going to get to the point where he is oversaturated in the market and loose value to those hipsters

Sell... The Giant stuff is pretty bad ass.... Hell it started in Provdence! But the bottom will fall out eventually. So IF you like it at its value then keep it, but dont keep it thinking it will go up because it probably wont.

make it a "BUY IT NOW" only auction and put a "BUY IT NOW" price of $800 (or whatever) ,if it sells,great...but if it dosn't...no big deal.(if your item don't sale,Ebay don't charge a fee).

or if you want to auction it off....make sure that you put a reserve price on it.

looking at it the past few days, i still like the print.
but i am also still turned off by the popularity and commercialization.
anyway, instead of hanging it in my finished basement, the money from this sale will go towards actually finishing the basement.

Damn that is some major coin. What did you pay? If you don't mind me asking.

NEVERMIND. I saw the $35. I was jsut taken aback by the $850 buy it now. That is what you call investing 201. The advanced course. CONGRATS.
