computer question
In idiot terms so I can understand it.
What does the "GHz" for the processor do?
What does the "MB" "DDR" "SDRAM memory" do?
What does the "GB" "RPM" "DMA hard drive" do?
CD-ROM DRIVE MAX SPEED do?
If anyone can brake this down for me it would be appreciated. I am looking for a new laptop and would like to know what I need/want from a new
computer. Instead of grabbing something off the shelf and relying on a BEST BUY idiot to do it for me. I have looked at a couple HP, SONY VAIO and
DELL computers at the local Sam's Club and Bj's. I will research MAC soon online but figured I could get more stuff/memory etc from a regualar pc for
my buck. If I am wrong set me straight.

GHz is the speed of the processer, the more GHz the faster it runs. Dual core would be faster as its like 2 processors in 1.
MB is the size of RAM, megabytes. These days you usually get 512MB-1GB in laptops.
DDR is Dual something RAM...I forget haha but its what I use, there's DDR2 which is faster. SDRAM is older I think and not used as much these days.
Its the temporary memory and if you plan on running any high end programs (media applications, graphics etc) you will want more RAM. Also if you get
Vista on it, though I'd format the bitch & use XP or Linux
GB is the size of the hard drive, stored memory. This is where all data will be stored. I think 60-80GB is the norm on laptops, depends how much of
what you plan on saving. RPM is the speed, generally 5400-7200RPM just how many RPM's the drive spins, faster reading of data if you get 7200RPM.
Not sure what the DMA is though.
HP would be a decent buy since its Compaq, Mac would be good as well depending what you need the laptop for really.
A lot of people ask me what kind of music I like. I love "soul music". My "soul music" isn’t a style, genre or niche. It’s music that is genuine. It’s
a painful lyric, a dirty bassline, it’s a harrowing vocal, it’s feedback, it’s an anthem, it’s a love song, it’s anarchy. I’ve got my personal
favourites but in the end it doesn’t matter who or where it comes from... so long as it’s good and it's real.

I would use it for everyday use and want a mac but the price may keep me from them unless I can find a deal like a student discount or somehting. I am
trying to locate the thread someone posted a while back about the link to a discount. If you type the school in it will give you the discount rate. I
think BD posted it but not sure. I am not against a regualr pc since I am happy with my COMPAQ I have now. I jsut want a laptop to save space and have
for transport if I need to school and shit. I want ot be one of those douchbags sitting in BORDERS using a laptop.
Thanks for all the info Mike. that is what i was asking for. You broke it down for me bro. Your the best.

Here's the main link to the Apple student discounts: http://www.apple.com/education/hed/students/discounts.html
I got a Macbook last year and love it. All of the wireless crap is built in already, so you don't have to worry about wireless cards, etc... so
you're instantly the douchebag at Borders right out of the box!
I've had no problems with viruses, programs failing, files being lost, or any of the other shit that made me hate PCs.

What sucks is its a free nano and not a monitary discount. I want to save money.

Check the prices more carefully. I just double-checked, and it looks like there's a $100 academic discount, at least for my school. I know that I
had a discount last year, too, when I was at a different school.
The 80GB Macbook is $1099 in the regular Apple store, but $999 with the academic discount that I'm seeing.

yeah, for every school i;ve ever seen, there is at least a $100 price difference in low end machines; more in high end.
also look for a link on the apple store's main page for refurbished equipment.
If I fail math, there goes my chance at a good job and a happy life full of hard work.
