Good record labels
As inspired by the Hard Response thread, who do people feel are some of the better small(ish) record labels around today? I know ourselves and HR are
looking for someone to get involved with some releases in the future etc. So im looking for people to hit me up with some labels we can contact. Also,
Anyone from Thorp or Sailors Grave on these boards?

I hope it works out for you guys with I Scream.
Personally I'm getting fed up with the label-searching thing myself. I must be really out of touch with what kind of bands they deem that are worthy.
So after a long discussion with the rest of the band last night, we decided to just say fuck-it and continue to write music and play shows on our own
with out label support. It just fuels my discontent for the modern hardcore scene.
Plus it seems like most labels are scaling back or even folding. I mean what has Spook City, Thorp, or Blackout released recently?

There is absolutely NO reason for a hardcore band who has access to the internet to have to be on a record label.
You can write it, press it, promote it and ship it yourself. No need what-so-ever for a middle man.

To elaborate...
1. record, mix and master
2. if no one in the band is capable of doing artwork/layout there are a billion hc kids who will do it for next to nothing with tons of talent.
3. send the package out to the pressing plant.
4. approve proofs and wait.
5. buy an easy to remember/band related domain name and have the provider blind link it to your myspace page (no skills needed, costs you $5-10 for
the domain and more people go to myspace than real band websites anyway)
6. get a paypal account, set up payment buttons on myspace page
7. place ads in zines, bomb mboards and myspace, burn sampler cd's to hand out at shows (with your new www.name on them).
8. send a cd to very and rev distros, wait 2 weeks, email or call them, ask them how many they want.
9. go to bagsunlimited.com, buy a bunch of bubble mailers.
10. send promos to every active related webpage and zine.
this is not some crust punk DIY type operation, bands like Cold as Life sold 15,000 CD's doing things themselves...most record label signed hc bands
rarely sell 1000. if people like your music and its available it will sell.

I agree 100% too, thats what we've been doin since 01. But there comes a point where a label getting involved financially can be the make it or break
it point. Having a label behind you who are willing to take care of a lot of the business end of things can free you up to concentrate on
recording, writing and touring. I mean, this last USA tour we done, I booked that whole fucker online it took months cause bitches were canceling shows
and shit so I'd have to go looking for another band or promoter in that area to sort something out. Having a decent label that could help us with
booking shows abroad would be amazing from my own personal point of view, havin someone who knows their shit coming onboard. Distro'ing albums and CDs
is a huge factor too. I mean we can get it on iTunes and all that mp3 shit and maybe find a few stores in the states to stock it. But having actual
CDs in stores across the country and someone to tell people about your music is a biggie. Theres only so much pimpin we can do online.
