COMPUTER QUESTION
I am buying a laptop. Most likely a HP 2Gram 160 GBhd. How do I take my itunes and transfer it to the new computer? What do I need to buy or not buy
to do this? Is it difficult? BEST BUY will but it costs money. Its really just itunes for the ipod and some school papers I wrote. Also some family
photo folders.
Any help is appreciated.
The next question is after I do this how do I delete all my personal info and make it clean so I can sell it? I'm talking like bank account info,
resume stuff etc, if it is saved somehow. Where do I look for it and how do I delete it all so no one can access it?
thanks.

Also if anyone is interested it is a
COMPAC presario 3000 = (2.16GHz)
512 MB PC2700 DDR SDRAM
160 GB7200RPM
dvd+rw/cd-rw
dvd&cd writer combo
cd rom drive
model # SR1030nx
The monitor is a 17" flatsceen MAG platinum series. Its not one of those monitors that are a big box. Its like a flatsreen tv you hang on a wall.
MY cousin is possibly grabbing it and I called a computer re-seller who offered $250 for everything. My cousin or you guys can have it for $210. Just
keep in mind I will need to charge shipping.
I paid $1700 from BEST BUY in summer of 2004.

Find your iTunes folder on your hard disk and copy it to CD or DVD or whatever, then you can just drag it onto the new machine.
as for cleaning it down, log in as administrator and go to documents and settings and find your profile (folder with your username) and delete it.
That should delete all your personal files. Just make sure you back everything before you do it.
However chances are whoever buys it will format the disk and start fresh.

That isn't going to work if he has more more than 700mb (cd) or 4.7gb (dvd) of music.
You could burn all your music and photos to DVD as data discs. Each regular DVD with hold 4.7gb of music/photos/whatever. The only other thing you
can do it get an external hard drive and copy all your shit to that and then upload the files to your new computer

When you get your new Lap Top use the file and settings transfer wizard located at Start- Accessories-System Tools. All you need is a double ended
USB line. You are all set. The wizard walks you through it. It will take some time but it is an easy way to go.

how much file space does your music currently take up?
you do have a few options...
1) depending on how much music you have, burn the audio files as data to cd(s) or dvd(s). make sure you do it as a data disk and not music.
2) fire up an external hard drive
3) network the two computers and transfer files from one to the other.
if you don't have an external hard drive, you can use your ipod as a hard drive.
basically what you would do is...
- make sure that computer 1 is the master collection; everything should be in there.
- delete everything from your ipod.
- enable 'disk mode' on your ipod (http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=61131)
- drag the audio files to you ipod as though it were an external hard drive (NOT via a traditional iTunes sync process)
- connect the ipod to your new computer and drag the audio files from the ipod to itunes on the new computer.
and really, you can do this with any type of file, not just audio - pictures, spread sheets, whatever. once you've enabled disk mode, anything upload
to the ipod is just treated as raw data and not subject to file type limitations or drm or anything else.
If I fail math, there goes my chance at a good job and a happy life full of hard work.

awsome. Thanks for all the info. I have like 30 GB of HD space for just the ipod. So making them as cds I assume would be crazy.

You can also save your library.itl file so you don't need to re-create a library on the new laptop.
For wiping it, search the net for proper hard drive wipers, something that will reset all sectors to 0. Even if you delete profiles, format and
partition a hard drive, it can be easily restored with SpinRite or Active Partition Recovery software.
Wiping the drive to 0 in all sectors will properly erase every trace of data.
LSoft (they make Active Partition Recovery) make software to erase data also, will format drive to 0's in the free version and if you pay a few bucks
will do the pro job. Check out this link for info:
http://www.pcworld.com/article/id,110338/article.html
http://www.killdisk.com/
Killdisk will do the job but from my experience with the Partition Recovery tool and the comments on PC World, their programs take a long time to run
so you'll leave it a few days to make enough passes to wipe it real good.

Anyone have an opinon on the following computer brands?
DELL
HP
TOSHIBA
SONY
GATEWAY
Those are the ones I am comparing. I wish it were MAC but for the money the first few brands offer the best bang for the buck when it comes to
features. Wish MAC sold IBOOK PROS or other laptops that are refurbished like they do with ipods and stuff. Then maybe I can grab one for a decent
price.

The Reed83's have had two HP PC's. Both have been/were great. I have a toshiba satellite laptop and I love it. I would recommend both brands.

When choosing a laptop is it a dissadvantage to NOT HAVE the full size keyboard? I noticed some have the # keypad on the right side on them and some
don't. My wife thinks its necessary, but I never use them.

cool.
My wife is an acountant so that would account for her need for it. She can have the old PC and I'll get the laptop.

^^^^^^^ I can see why you would. I had a guy at CIRCUIT CITY tell me that I should keep my desk top for school papers and use the laptop for
convenience.

You gotta go to My Documents or something and find your library file, I think its .itl extension. Move the library file to the new PC in the same
spot and load your new iTunes with it.
New iTunes should be able to open old libraries, but you can't go backwards so if you open a library in 7.2, it will no longer open in 7.1 if you roll
back versions down the road.
Did you check out Killdisk yet to wipe your old drive when you're done with it?
If you want to use a lot of things from the old PC on the new one it'd probably be easier to wipe the new laptop and image the hard drive using Ghost
or something, disk to disk copy.

I really only want the itunes and maybe a some school papers and shit. resume or shit like htat. Itunes is really the main reason for this. Where does
itunes usually park itself when you DL it? I really would like to find the ACTUAL itunes and everyhting that goes with it and then transfer. I am
finding some itunes stuff but not the actual whole deal itself.
ANY IDEAS WHERE THIS MIGHT BE? When they ask you for a place to put it I go with what is suggested. So wherever I shoul dbe looking for the hole
itunes library is wher eI need to be. So where might that be?
Thanks again!

C:\Program Files\iTunes
Windows generally doesn't work so you can copy the iTunes folder and paste it into the new system. The setup file needs to be run so the DLL links
and everything can be established.
Best bet is run the setup, install then move your library file over. Usually the library file is here:
My Documents\My Music\iTunes\iTunes Library.itl
