Gene Simmons is fucking FUNNY!

Gene Simmons, founder of successful pop-metal act Kiss, is the latest artist to comment about the music industry that has afforded him a great deal of success. When pressed by an Billboard interview about the possibility of recording new music, he lashed out saying:

The record industry is in such a mess. I called for what it was when college kids first started download music for free -- that they were crooks. I told every record label I spoke with that they just lit the fuse to their own bomb that was going to explode from under them and put them on the street.

There is nothing in me that wants to go in there and do new music. How are you going to deliver it? How are you going to get paid for it if people can just get it for free?

The record industry doesn't have a f*cking clue how to make money. It's only their fault for letting foxes get into the henhouse and then wondering why there's no eggs or chickens. Every little college kid, every freshly-scrubbed little kid's face should have been sued off the face of the earth. They should have taken their houses and cars and nipped it right there in the beginning. Those kids are putting 100,000 to a million people out of work.

You can check out the interview here: http://www.billboard.biz/bbbiz/search/article_display.jsp?vn...

If I fail math, there goes my chance at a good job and a happy life full of hard work.

How do you think I got the Alive Albums? He's a greedy mother fucker.

I did see the original 4 back in '98. God damn that was an awesome show.

My sister met Paul at a gallery showing a few months ago. Said he was the nicest dude in the world. He spent time talking and meeting everyone and was great to my nephews.

fuck him. it's always the filthy rich douchebags that complain about music being downloaded. if the thought that you might not make millions of dollars off your next record makes you stop playing music, you never got it anyway and never will.

I think its the filthy rich motherfuckers that complain because they can. If some guy from an underground punk band complains then he risks alientating his audience. Gene could give a fuck.

My stance on downloading has always been that if the band/artist wants to give something away then they can/should. But it should be at their discretion.... as with anything else in life. Not just music.

Realistically, there is no one in college downloading Kiss songs. Maybe in a community college but not a University.

i always fully encouraged people to download or burn our albums, and not because i was trying to hold up some image. i could really give a fuck about that nonsense. i just wanted people to hear our music. gene gives a shit because he's a greedy piece of shit. kiss were never any more about the music than britney spears or any of the other garbage on the radio. whether someone wants their music downloaded or not hardly matters anymore. the point is moot since it's happening and will not stop. largely the only people that's is hurting are the mid level bands that can't quite make a living out of it yet. and you know what, people said the same thing in the 80s with the whole "home recording is killing music" shit. without mixed tapes when i was a kid i would have never heard a lot of the bands i love to this day. i'm not saying the issue is black and white and people who don't support the bands they claim to love at all, especially the younger kids with lots of disposable income, are a bit ridiculous. that being said, if the only reason someone plays music is to "make it" they can go fuck themselves and i can always hear it in their music. as far as your comment about community college, get fucked. i go to community college and i have better taste than to download or buy that garbage.

Gene Simmons is a dick. I read his book "Kiss and Make Up". Not even sure why. I hate Kiss. But it made me hate him even more.

I wonder how it would be received if someone more credible like Bruce Springsteen or Michael Stipe came out and said something similar.

Yeah.... I know what you mean. But I'm not saying the crass wording. I mean the sentiment really. Or how about someone of modest success that isn't quite rich like a Tim Armstrong or Ken Casey?

Gene makes a lot of good points here:
1. The record industry is fucked - that's majors and indies

2. It could have been prevented by either putting a stop to it or adapting somehow

3. Call it what you want... taking something from someone against their will is stealing. Key phrase: against their will.

I'd like to think that someone could come out and stand up against file sharing and word it in an intelligent and professional manner that can't be dismissed by people with a false sense of entitlement. But people are scared. That's why you get someone like Gene Simmons or Lars Ulrich as the only people with enough balls to do it. Why can't someone come out and say "Look, I don't want you to take my stuff without getting it in the format I inteded. Here's a free set of songs you can feel free to download because I really think this is the future here. But I want you to buy my album and get it as I intended... artwork, sequencing and all"? It seems easy enough to do without ruffling feathers.

Anyway.... just a discussion. I don't really have much of an opinion on the specifics of file sharing. I never download songs. Even if a band puts one up for download on their site, I stream it and either buy the album or don't buy it. It doesn't make sense to me why file sharing is all the rage really.

someone once said "the mark of intelligence is being able to entertain another persons opinion without accepting it". that person was correct.

I see both points of view, Gene Simmons is a huge D-bag so its easy to hate him, so is Lars, I don't think downloading music is killing the industry in the way that the RIAA would like you to beleive, but why shouldn't you support the smalltime or midlevel band who's busting their rear? Justify it however you want but it is stealing unless the artist is trying to give it away. In alot of cases it might be justified, I'm not going to condemn someone stealing from walmart, but that doesn't mean I'm willing to walk into one and take a TV myself. If you want to steal from Kiss I'm not personally offended, but if you're downloading music from a band on Thorp then I think your a jerk.

Brian: its adimirable that your willing to give away your songs, thats defintely cool, but cool doesn't fill up a gas tank to get you to the next show.

I've said it on here before and I'll say it again, I'm against file sharing. It's one thing for a band to offer their songs for free download on their website. It's another thing all together when some fans decide to put it out for free on the internet because the band has no say in the matter. I remember tape trading fondly, but it's completely different from file sharing. I burn an album here and there for friends, but I'm not putting out there where millions of people have access to it. I also don't see the enjoyment being the same, as I like having the whole package. Downloading doesn't give you the lyrics, artwork, etc.

When it comes to the price of music these days, I find ways to buy it cheaper. I never go to record stores anymore as they charge an arm and a leg. It's generally cheaper to buy it straight from the band or from the label. Even with shipping, it's cheaper for me to buy a cd directly from Thorp than buy from a store here. Distro's like RevHQ and Interpunk are pretty good in terms of their pricing and their shipping fees. Ebay is great for buying used cd's cheap. Asx a fan of a genre like punk where most bands work day jobs to be able to afford to play music, I'd rather see them get a couple of bucks by buying their album, as opposed to stealing it.

I don't understand how music has become something people seem to think they have a "right" to get for free. I realize I'm in the minority here. I also realize I'd have a lot more money if I started downloading as opposed to spending as much as I do on music. I just like to support the things I love I guess. I don't download or burn movies either. Maybe I'm just old fashioned.
