Radio frequency identification.
basically tiny chips that send out a signal with whatever information is relevant. Some credit cards already have them, passports and licenses will
eventually, and they are also used for inventory management.
The idea is that since they broadcast a signal, all you need is the corresponding recording device to pick it up. For inventory, that means no longer
scanning each item, but simply walking down the isle and letting each item tell you it's there. For credit cards, all you have to do is wave it in
front of a reader instead of executing that oh so challenging swipe.
There are two issues with RFID.
1. Since the chip is constantly broadcasting, in theory, anyone with the right equipment could grab the info. Now, they're all designed to only
broadcast so far, in some cases literally an inch, but still.
2. If you're of the super nerdy (or super devious sort), they're easy to hack. So take the e-passport... if you're a criminal, you update the
identity on the chip with that of a local average joe, and bam, all your travel restrictions have been lifted.
Most people involved in the industry will say that these concerns are of theoretical breaches. Bullshit. It's all been done. I actually sent back
the RFID credit card i got from chase about a year ago. Don't want it.

^^^^^^^^ why didn't that help them locate that pregnant Marine that they finally found buried today?

I;m not completely positive the IDs are outfitted with this technology or how much of it they use if it is. Theres also a chance she just didn't have
her Military ID on her, I always forget it when I'm in my civvies, my wife yells at me all the time for it. They always ask if I'm in the military to
give me a discount when I don't have it on me

clevo, rfid doesn't broadcast with the power of a gps transmitter or something.
it's typically a VERY weak signal, often designed to be picked up within an inch or two, or some cases several feet.
