Ethical/Moral dillema's at work
Have you been faced with these? If so, how did you deal with it.
I quit my job a couple of months ago (I'm so broke it ain't funny, still haven't found anything new) because I was asked to do things I wasn't
comfortable with.
This is the situation, I was working for a collection agency that bragged about how "by the book" they were, and held themselves to higher standards
than most other agencies. From what many employees told me it was true, as they had all worked at other agencies previously. Something that came up
is that I would be looking at the credit history of a debtor, and would see they owed child support, usually several thousands of dollars. I asked my
boss what I should do in these cases, when people are pleading poverty and use the fact that they owe child support as proof. I was told, in no
uncertain terms, to encourage the people to "stick it to their exes. " I should tell them to "pay this cell phone bill instead of paying your ex
who's greedy and wants all your money."
Seeing as my sister, and others I know, are owed several thousands of dollars in unpaid child support, I felt this was inappropriate and told my boss
that. He said, "fuck the women they owe, they aren't our client, the cell phone companies are. Get that money." After this conversation they would
listen in on my calls and give me shit every time I didn't go with that particular line of attack.
This, along with some other bullshit I was forced to deal with, pissed me off so bad that I walked up to my boss in the middle of the day and quit on
the spot. Was I wrong to take it so personally?

I think it comes down to what you care more about, these woman who are owed child support, or yourself. You are missing out on a paycheck while the
asshole that only cares about himself is sitting pretty.

Yeah it's cool you hold yourself to higher standards but like Furly said you're the one who got fucked. And besides, fuck the asshole who's
delinquent on his child support. Like he'll pay the child support anyway.

I realize these guys aren't likely to pay their child support anytime soon, but I felt it was wrong to encourage such behaviour. I found it funny
that I wasn't allowed to yell at people or insult them, but was encouraged to tell them not make court-ordered support payments.
Yeah I fucked myself over, but it still felt right to me. I would have felt dirty and hypocritical accepting a paycheque for doing something I was
completely against.

I quite a "phone sales" job for a similar reason...
Basically, it was mostly old ladies calling in for "Miracle of Aloe" "free" samples. Well, the "free" samples were $6.95 shipping and handeling and
to top that, it was attached to an auto shipment.... And the auto shipment? 2 full sized bottles a month at $20.00 a pop. The day I got a sale and
knew the old lady had no idea what an auto shipment was and would have NO idea how to cancel it, I left. The shit was so sneeky they have you record
just the end of the call where before hand you tell the peson on the line to awnser "yes" to every question. Basically, a verbal contract read fast
to old people while they awnser yes.

Discipline. You did the right thing, relative to how you feel. I dont see anything wrong with it and put in a similiar situation, I would probably do
the same thing. In fact many years ago I quit a spot because of how rudley and heartlessly it treated people, which included employees. Theres only so
much a man can take.

You wanna talk about a moral dilema, I serve in the military, and absolutely despise the goverment and have a political point of view as radical as
they come. That shit eats at me every fuckin day.

Why did you join then bro? I am pretty damn happy with my service and don't feel as though in my almost 8 years I have been asked to do anything that
conflicted with my personal morality. Disc, good on you bro, I hope you find something soon and it makes you happy doing it, you deserve it my man.

good on ya bro. integrity is such an antiquated notion these days.

fire, but I?m just not close enough to get the job done.? George Carlin
