How do you feel about corporate sponsors for bands?
With the company in some amount of turmoil since their purchase by private equity firm Terra Firma, big four major label EMI has announced that they
are cutting between 1500 and 2000 jobs. .
Along with that news, is the more bizarre plan to begin corporate sponsorship for bands on the label. Guy Hands, who is running the label for Terra
Firma explained:
Football teams have very distinct corporate sponsorship. Why shouldn't some of the leading bands have the same sort of relationships? EMI could help
bands who would not make it on the international stage find local sponsors who want to break into the student market.
So, does this mean that new albums from Beastie Boys, Yellowcard, The Starting Line, Relient K and 30 Seconds to Mars could be brought to you by
McDonald's, Pepsi, Starbucks, Walmart and Coca Cola?

Bottom line is, I don't think I'd really care. Then again, it would turn me off.
For example:
I LOVE the show Biggest Loser. It drives me nuts when the do product placement shit during the show.

If I was in a band I wouldn't want to have anything to do with it. If I had no choice, then I'd at least demand to have a say in who the sponsor
would be.

I can deal with bands being sponsored by equipment companies and god knows how many hardcore bands are sponsored by some clothing company. I mean
shit I saw a hardcore band sponsored by New Era Fitted hats. But ads on something I paid for such as a CD is just crossing the line. I expected that
to happen with major label bands but I would say fuck any band that does it.

I don't want to look on the back of a Motorhead cd and see a McDonald's logo. Nuff said.

I could care less. If Blood for Blood got paid a mil and all it mant was a Best Buy logo on the back of there cd, good for them. Free money is the
way I look at it. The world is oversaturated with ads so who cares.

Somehow I don't see the bands benefitting nearly as much as the record companies.

If the sponsorship was something that made sense with the band and what they stand for, then no problem. Of course, what corporate sponsor fits in
with anything most of us want to listen to anyway? I'm assuming this is something that's only going to affect mainstream bands on giant labels that
are pretty far outside the world I live in, but I want nothing to do with a band that endorses something like McDonalds or worse.

If I ever see a McDonalds logo (that isn't on fire) on any punk album I'm leaving.
Well, its this place where nobody works, and the pigs don\'t give you any shit. Everyone smokes weed and gets drunk all day. Its a place where
cunts like me and you can truly take it easy and relax. Know what I mean?

Who care? If the band could make more money then good for them. Its their job and they want to make money, so let them do it. If I was in a band and
it brought me more money I would be 100% into it and would not really care that much about who thought what about it.

Isn't Murphy's Law sponsored by Jagermeister in some way? Cause I've seen several ML tour posters with a big ass Jagermeister logo, and it's the only
band I've seen pound down bottles of it on stage.
NRSV should be sponsored by Olde English, but I think they might actually have to pay for all the 40s they drink.
Didn't someone on here post the news article about how labels were moving into band sponsorship deals? I read it somewhere, and I swear the only way
I'd find it is if BD or Honus posted it on the board. Basically, merch and touring are how bands make money... and now that labels aren't making
money off selling CDs, they're looking for new types of contracts that let them cash in on the things bands used to rely on (like merch). But labels
are also pushing it as a way to "invest" in new bands (and make money off them as they tour relentlessly for a few years before releasing an
album in order to build a following) without taking as much risk.
But the bottom line is that once one way of making money disappears, businesses find a new way.

Actually, looks like all these bands are sponsored by Jagermeister. Just look at the start of each line... the rest of the crap is stupid. But I had
no idea that Hatebreed, Darkest Hour, The Toasters, Catch 22, CKY, Clutch, Slayer, Terror and plenty of others were sponsored, too.
