What are your thoughts on digital only releases?
As some know we have a new EP out soon. We are toying with the idea of doing it as a digital only release through iTunes and all the usual download
places. It boils down to back for buck I think. Everyone loves to own the actual product but we are so fucking broke and it looks like a label wont go
near us cause we are based in Ireland but we really want to get this out there.
Thoughts?

For you guys it may be better but I am in the realm of having the actual cd. I like the produt rather than the a file.
Each aspect of the soul has it's own part to play, but the ideal is harmonious agreement with reason and control.

Do it. There are a couple prominent labels moving in this direction, especially for their smaller bands. Kids (not the 30+ year olds of the Thorp
board) do not buy CD's. There are these things now called "drop cards" that are REALLY cheap to get made. Basically they have the album cover on
them with a little info about the album and the web address and a unique code to download the album. The thing is you can sell them even for a few
dollars and still make a profit...or you can give them away for free. If you press any physical product, make it vinyl. Kids collect vinyl and will
pay for it if they like the band. CD's and CD stores are old news.

Im not a fan of downloads for new stuff, but Im also cheap. I figured if Im going to pay $1 a song I may as well pay $10 and actually own the CD. But
like Juice said Im 30+ and cheap as hell!
The idea that Juice said about the cards you can sell for download sound like a good idea. You could even put them in slim line jewel cases.

my only complaint about the download only option is the quality.
i can't get down with this 128k bs.
i need it RAW!!
(and by that, i mean uncompressed.)
If I fail math, there goes my chance at a good job and a happy life full of hard work.

128 is bullshit. Anything below 256 is pretty much shit.
What I'm thinking about is having the downloads on iTunes etc and also running a transfer center at gigs. We'd have a laptop set up and people could
bring their own iPods and mp3 players, and we'd load the Ep on for 3 bucks or something.
We'll see, cause unless we can get a label involved with this its either going to be a long wait for CDs or go with the digital plan. We'd prefer CDs
obviously.

I'd say do it. There's nothing stopping you from releasing a hard copy later.
Well, its this place where nobody works, and the pigs don\'t give you any shit. Everyone smokes weed and gets drunk all day. Its a place where
cunts like me and you can truly take it easy and relax. Know what I mean?

I'm all for it. My band/project demo is gonna be digital only also but it will be free. I recommend using LAME 3.97 final for encoding and using
this command line option:
-V 2 --vbr-new
That will give you a perfect quality VBR encoding that will be a transparent, to your ears, copy of the source. OK. Smoke time...........

I don't buy any digital music at all as I prefer to have the actual product. The unfortunate reality is younger kids don't feel the same way. Juice
hit the nail on the head with his post.

If you want to get money from sales I would setup Paypal yourself and email people direct high quality VBR rip or burn them to CD-R to get it out
there. If you want more people to get into it and make a bigger name, stick with digital and again rip in VBR and start uploading it to Soulseek and
a shitload of torrent trackers, get it out there.
I'd never buy a thing from iTunes.
A lot of people ask me what kind of music I like. I love "soul music". My "soul music" isn’t a style, genre or niche. It’s music that is genuine. It’s
a painful lyric, a dirty bassline, it’s a harrowing vocal, it’s feedback, it’s an anthem, it’s a love song, it’s anarchy. I’ve got my personal
favourites but in the end it doesn’t matter who or where it comes from... so long as it’s good and it's real.

I purchased this last Joe Coffee disc as a download, which came with cover art. It sounded perfect.

If your gonna' go that far, why not patch into the board, record the show and sell people a copy of the show they just watched? Tell them before hand
too, so they're nice and boisterous.

Only until recently did I start to enjoy an Ipod but I cannot see myself ever purchasing a digital only download. The one thing I like that labels
have been doing is giving away free digital downloads with their 7"/10"'s.

I would never be interested in digital only releases. It's one thing if it's a promo thing for free, but as an actual release it would either make me
pass up a new band or just be annoyed by an established band if it was a band I liked.

KISS did this when I saw them a number of years ago. I didnt get a disc but I always though the concept was cool.
...As for digital downloads. Havnt purchased one. Wont purchase one. I have not given up on the tradition of actual hard copy of releases with inlay,
cover art, with real cd.
Although I do feel strongly about my opinion, if 20BE tried the digital route and made it work in their favor, more power to them.

Check out this site www.dropcards.com .
I will be using them for some projects at work but basically they give you space on their site for free and sell you credit card thingys with a punch
code on the back. They are cheap 35 cents per unit if you order 1000. They come with whatever branding you send them. It's a cool way to sell
digital at live shows and you can do it really cheap. There is no limit and no service fees for downloads as they are in the business of selling the
cards.
I'm really excited about this company and if I had known about them a year ago i wouldn't have spent the thousands of dollars to produce a CD. Itunes
and such is great too and for that I would go with CD BABY. For 35 clams they will digitize and deliver your record to 25 major digital retailers.

Think about it this way: You could release a vinyl only album with one of these digital releases inside. That is a fucking cool thing that I would
buy in an instant.
