1 in 4 teen girls has an STD
About 1 in 4 teenage girls in the United States - and nearly half of black girls - has at least one sexually transmitted disease, according to a study
released yesterday, providing the first national snapshot of infection rates among this age group.
more stories like thisThose numbers translate into an estimated 3.2 million adolescent females infected with one of the four most common STDs - many
of whom may not even know they have a disease or that they are passing it to their sex partners.
"What we found is alarming," said Dr. Sara Forhan, a researcher with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the study's lead author. "This
means that far too many young women are at risk for the serious health effects of untreated STDs, including infertility and cervical cancer."
The study's authors analyzed data on 838 girls between ages 14 and 19 who participated in the 2003-04 National Health and Nutrition Examination
Survey, an annual study that assesses a broad range of health issues. For the analysis, the teens were tested for human papillomavirus (HPV),
chlamydia, trichomoniasis, and herpes. By far, the most common sexually transmitted disease was HPV. Of those infected, 15 percent had more than one
STD.
"It shows that what people have always suspected is true," said Dr. Emily J. Erbelding, an infectious diseases specialist at Johns Hopkins Bayview
Medical Center. "Sexually transmitted infections have been called a hidden epidemic because a lot of these conditions are going to be asymptomatic
when they're diagnosed, but they're highly common."
The overall figures could be slightly higher because other sexually transmitted diseases - syphilis, HIV, and gonorrhea - were not included in the
study, although epidemiologists say the prevalence is low for those infections among adolescents. The study did not include teenage boys.
The paper was being presented this week at a CDC conference on STD prevention in Chicago.
Forhan said she was surprised to see how readily the risk to young women appears. Of those in the study who said they had just one sexual partner in
their lifetime, the prevalence of STDs was 20 percent, she said.
While parents may be surprised by the study, it's a reflection of what doctors have been seeing in their practices in recent years, said Dr. Ligia
Peralta, chief of the Division of Adolescent and Young Adult Medicine at the University of Maryland Hospital for Children in Baltimore. In a small
study done among girls in her university clinic in 2000, primarily black teens, 90 percent of the sexually active teens had HPV.
She called the CDC study "critical information for parents" and encouraged them to use this knowledge to be sure their daughters are being properly
screened and taught about protection and prevention.
There are 19 million sexually transmitted diseases in the United States - costing the healthcare system $15 billion a year - and almost half occur
among the 14-to-25 age group, said Dr. Kevin Fenton of the CDC. Officials called sexually transmitted diseases a public health epidemic and said
efforts must be made to improve screening, education, and other prevention strategies for sexually active teens.

HPV seems to be the biggest one from what I know of - most girls around here easily admit to having it (most guys do too). It's no big deal to anyone
around here. The girls just do their paps very regularly and the guys of course don't give a shit as we don't have a "cervix"
I'm sure I have some form(s) of HPV as I have had warts in various body locations since I was in pre-school. HPV is a "contact disease" - it's not
transferred in body fluids, just by skin making contact. HPV rates have always been high, but I remember when tanning beds first starting getting so
big, rates went through the roof among women. Some doctors even think most everyone is born with at least one or two HPV strains.
I have also read many statistics that say that women, by the age of (I think it's 50) - 90% of them will test positive for HPV.
My brother-in-law is a doctor in Knoxville TN (he is actually Johnny Knoxville's mothers doctor) - and he said that definitely more than 1 out of
every 2 females he sees has a genital strain of HPV. So I guess if you're not married or staying with the same partner, you very well might just be
fucked.
As far as I know, I've never had any STD's, though my brother-in-law told me that HPV doesn't cause any symptoms probably 50% of the time. But then
again, I'm not married nor do I have a steady relationship with one girl, so I guess I'm going to have to take my chances with the jungle out there
"welcome to the jungle baby - you gonna die".......

HPV lives dormant in many people and never comes out to a full fledged disease. No wonder they found it in a lot of women
A lot of people ask me what kind of music I like. I love "soul music". My "soul music" isn’t a style, genre or niche. It’s music that is genuine. It’s
a painful lyric, a dirty bassline, it’s a harrowing vocal, it’s feedback, it’s an anthem, it’s a love song, it’s anarchy. I’ve got my personal
favourites but in the end it doesn’t matter who or where it comes from... so long as it’s good and it's real.

At my last job I worked with a lady named Iris. She was short and pale and sweat like no ones business. She also had scab formations all over her
face, shit was nasty. Anyways I used to call her human papilloma Iris. I thought it was the funniest thing ever but for some reason it never caught
on....That was one of the reason I quit.

HPV = nothing at all for guys. There isnt even a test for it, so a guy can never even know if he indeed has it.
For women, it's a different story as it MAY lead to cancer.

You could take it like that. Or you could take it like... kids aren't using protection anymore and their risk factors are through the roof. If 25% of
teen girls have these 4 STDs there's a chance that a high percentage have other STDs, though I'll assume a lower pecentage than have this paritcular
set, which then leaves an even higher chance of HIV/AIDS.
That's bad fucking news. Especially with black dudes being gay "on the downlow" and being more likely to engage in risky unprotected behavior. That
50% of black girls(yep, that's in the study too) they mention having these 4 STDs are at higher risk for getting HIV because of the older DL gay/bi
ex-cons they'll be hooking up with over the years.
Talk about another plague...

even in females is extremely rare as long as they do their paps on at least a once-a-year basis.
For guys....well, you might get a wart on your dick or your sack....but other than that, no big deal. They say it could possibly cause penile cancer,
but as far as I'm aware, there's no documented cases of HPV = penile cancer. The WORST thing if you're a guy and you have it is the risk of passing it
to a girl that doesn't.
The last girl I have been with sexually just had a pap in January and it was clear, so I guess I'm VERY lucky thus far. Though if I don't get married
or stick to the same girl I would say my chances for HPV are definitely in the high risk category (seeing as condoms are definitely not fool-proof
against HPV or even Herpes).
Of course, I don't WANT to obtain any STD, but you only life this short life once and I'm not going to give up one of the greatest parts of it anytime
soon out of fear.

thought".
Fuck it, just live life and enjoy it as much as you can. The time between this moment I'm typing this and the moment of my death will seem like a
blink of an eye. I'm certainly not condoning shooting a syringe full of heroin in the arm or any overt reckless behavior, but I'm never going to give
up sex with some hot girl for fear of getting an STD. I'll protect myself as best I can, but it's a risk I suppose I'll continue to take.

shes a piggy | It's in all honesty not that big a deal with girls anymore. I just think that so damn many of
them know they have it that it's almost MORE "normal" to say you have it than it is to not. Or at least equal.
Shit, when I was in high school, you NEVER heard a girl admitting she had ANY STD, not even the "get-rid-of" ones like Chlamydia. But nowadays, I
think I might know more girls that have told me they have HPV than girls that have not
