all -

thanks for the kind words, calls, texts and emails. the bd family appreciates you keeping us in your thoughts and prayers. we are happy to share that kiddo is now home and feeling quite a bit better.

to clarify, it was our 17 month old son who was in the hospital. i guess he didn't want his sister (now four) to get all the sympathy for that three month hospital stay she had.

the scary thing about kawasaki is that it presents like a dozen other much more common things that a kid could have - like common cold, pink eye, measles, strep throat - so often, docs waste precious time treating these other conditions. if kawasaki isn't treated within ten days, the likelihood of it causing damage to the heart increases significantly.

here's how it went down...
monday - little cough
tuesday - cough and runny nose
wednesday - cough, heavy chest & nasal congestion + 102 fever. first trip to pediatrician. relief = children's tylenol.
thursday - above + 103 fever + glands so swollen he couldn't move his head. second trip to peds. more tylenol.
friday - fever hits 104. third trip to peds cause tylenol no longer working. move to children's motrin.
saturday - fever pushing 105, covered in rash, blood shot eyes. still can't move his head, still with the nasty cough. by this point, the last proper meal and good night sleep were had on tuesday. he looked like he was high on heroin (nodding out with eyes half open and unfocused) and was practically too hot to hold (we did, of course, but we'd sweat the whole time.) back to the pediatrician. the rash and the eyes were the missing symptoms to diagnose kawasaki, so at this point, they admit him to the hospital.

he wound up staying in the hospital from last saturday until today, so a full week. the primary treatment for kawasaki is an IV of blood proteins, which takes about eight hours to deliver. that, plus a high does of aspirin for the duration of his stay. he appeared greatly improved by sunday, but he couldn't shake the fever, which stayed around 101. this past wednesday, it spiked back up to 105, so they gave the blood protein IVIG a second time and that seemed to do the trick. another 48 hours of monitoring and delivering the aspirin and they finally released him.

he had an echocardiogram and an electrocardiogram at the hospital to make sure there was no damage to his heart (there wasn't), but he'll have to followup with a cardiologist several times over the next year to ensure that nothing develops as a result of the disease.

so old boy came home today and is doing much better. a little cranky and a little weak, but he'll be back to his old self soon enough. crazy thing is you could tell he was happy to be home. big smile on his face as we walked to the front door, running over to his favorite toys. had a big ol' dinner of chicken nuggets and yogurt, followed by a bubble bath to wash all the hospital off of him and is sleeping like a champ as i type.

they call that a 'no no'.
after they placed the iv in his top of his hand, they put a splint on the inside of his hand, wrist and forearm.
that was wrapped in gauze, then the gauze was wrapped in the no no.
it's basically a fabric lined piece of plastic that is held shut with velcro straps.
it's to keep the kids from tearing out their iv.

homie was up at 6:30 this morning, alternating his calls for ma-ma and da-da.
for breakfast, he tore through two waffles and two cups of milk.
currently, he's downstairs stomping his sister's domino bridge.
yup, things are just about back to normal here!

Holy shit! He's huge! Last (and first) time I saw him he was a little infant. Good looking fella too.

Glad to hear he's doing better. That shit is scary. Reading that kinda makes me think of what my parents went through with me, but it was more drawn out and not as intense. Wow. I'm happy for you that he's back home.

It was so good to log on and see this. Good to hear he's up and about and trashing his sisters stuff (that's what older sisters are for, just ask mine). He had a lot of people pulling for him.

Well, its this place where nobody works, and the pigs don\'t give you any shit. Everyone smokes weed and gets drunk all day. Its a place where cunts like me and you can truly take it easy and relax. Know what I mean?

just back from our first visit to the cardiologist.
there doesn't appear to have been any damage from the kawasaki disease.
back again in two years to follow up.
can't begin to tell you how relieved we are.
thanks for all the kind words.
