someone please explain torrents

I know there was a recent thread about this, which I'll search for in a minute. But if someone wants to make it very simple, it would be very much appreciated.

My 80GB iPod was stolen a week ago... no problem, right? I mean, everything is still saved on my hard drive. And then my hard drive crashed on Saturday. There goes ten years worth of CDs, along with who knows how much random, obscure, or hard to find shit I've downloaded over the years. I'm going insane without music.

Sorry to hear about your headache, but having 80 gigs of music not backed up to an external hard drive is kind of insane. You can get one for $50...I'm sure the ripping and downloading of 10 years of music is worth WAY more than $50 of your time.

It wasn't 80 gigs of music, but it was an 80 gig ipod. I got an external hard drive to back everything up (again) before getting rid of the physical CDs, but well... was evidently a bit too slow on that process. On a side note, this is also why you should buy external HD in person if you're an idiot like me... ordered on online, and it needs to plug into a socket... basically, two weeks after it came, I moved overseas without backing up and haven't gotten a voltage converter. At least I backed up the other hard drive to the external.

ug, that sucks. you could try a recovery service, but it'll cost ya.

unfortunately, i don't know the first thing about torrents. i tried a mac app for them years ago, but it seemed like i had to wait literally days to download what i wanted.

apple replaced the HD. i literally watched the same thing happen to a friend's macbook two months ago, and that was her second HD in six months. i got mine when they first came out and thought the HD would be fine. seems that apple likes putting faulty hard drives in macs and doesn't feel like paying for a recall. try googling "mac question mark folder" and you should find out what i mean pretty quickly.

anyway, no more chance to do a recovery. i'm just glad i had the extended warranty, since crap like this has a tendency to happen. it just usually doesn't happen twice in four days.

You can try stuff like SpinRite 6 or @ctive Tools to restore your hard drive data.

Transmission or Deluge seem to be the most popular Mac torrent clients, uTorrent isn't available for Mac yet far as I know but I think it's being worked on. Not sure how to use either of these programs though:

http://www.transmissionbt.com/
http://deluge-torrent.org/

This might be a good source of info to learn torrents: http://www.slyck.com/bt.php

I'll update again later with basic torrent skills, I just ran outta break time and got the boss right behind me.

A lot of people ask me what kind of music I like. I love "soul music". My "soul music" isn’t a style, genre or niche. It’s music that is genuine. It’s a painful lyric, a dirty bassline, it’s a harrowing vocal, it’s feedback, it’s an anthem, it’s a love song, it’s anarchy. I’ve got my personal favourites but in the end it doesn’t matter who or where it comes from... so long as it’s good and it's real.

If you're in the USA I would be VERY careful with your P2P activity since the signing of the Pro IP act. I would rent a dedicated server over seas and DL everything to that then to you're MAC via SSH/SSL/FTPES. At the very least run an IP filter and keep it updated. Just my 2 cents.

Thanks... checking this out now. I'm in the UK, but I think they're probably equally sketchy (if not more so) about monitoring activity / privacy here. The only benefit, I guess, is that I'm only looking at the moment to replace a ton of shit on independent labels that I've bought over the years, so I don't think they'll sue me any time soon (especially when most are sadly out of existence... and yeah, I see the irony as I'm going to download it). Torrents just seem much faster than downloading individual albums when I've lost complete discographies from lots of bands.

Also, any good torrent sites/trackers are appreciated.

One more question... I'll try to keep the rest to u2u with MikeCore.

I try to start downloading, but it stops almost immediately. I saw something about how this might be due to privacy/firewall settings. Any recommendations?

Run something like http://www.canyouseeme.org/ and see if your torrent port is properly opened. I use higher number I think I'm on 2023 or something now, outside the usual torrent port range clients default to.

Once ya get the hang of it I can get you on any number of private sites for music, movies, tv & other.
