i been getting into a lot more stoner/doom/sludge stuff over the past couple of years.
saw these guys at roadburn festival last year and came away kinda underwhelmed.

check out Capricorns if you haven't heard them before.
these guys are fucking awesome.
There's no vocals for 99% of their stuff but the music speaks for itself.
Makes me feel like i'm in a movie when i listen to it on my mp3 player.

Broken Coffin... is an incredible song.

i first got into cult of luna with Salvation.
got it at a time in my life when i was up 20 hours a day.
i distinctly remember nodding off during the superslow parts of those 10 minute songs.
i really like they way they build tempo and get you emotionally involved in the songs.

i'm just about done listening to the capricorn tracks now.
i'll give em a few more listens, but so far, it's not really grabbing me.
vocals on broken promise are not my cup of tea.

would doomriders fall into this category?
all it have is that black thunder album, but it sounds 'sludgy' to me.

The first time I heard Cult of Luna was when they opened for Mastodon in NYC. Forgot what year that was. Mastodon was touring for Leviathan, but there weren't many people who got to the show early enough to see Cult of Luna. I loved em. I didn't really listen to anything like them at that point, but I immediately bought one of their cds. I think it's a self-titled. It's still packed away in a box somewhere. I like it and have wanted to buy more of their stuff, but I always forget.

I think of Isis as having a similar sound. I'd wanna say Neurosis as well, but I've only heard a few of their songs so I'm not sure I can say accurately.

Never been into the doom/stoner stuff too much. I love Catherdral though.

forgot about this thread

granted Capricorns can be a little tricky to get into.
the earlier EP 'Ruder Forms Survive' is a lot more primal than the newer stuff which is very textured and quite epic sounding in places. i first got into them cos my mate told me if I like huge riffs I will like them and they hit a spot with me that not many other bands do.

Isis I've seen a couple of times and like COL, I was into it for the first few tunes and then all of a sudden it was like i sobered up and they lost my attention. I have an Isis record at home somewhere that has the same effect on me.

I think you just need a lot of patience with this sort of thing, or well... to be really stoned so you can just sit there as a track unfolds.

Another band I fucking love that I only found out about in the last year or so is Yob from Portland.
The name conjures up images of an oi band or something but they couldn't be further from that.
www.myspace.com/yobdoom

I must admit I do get a bit confused/bored with the difference between sludge and stoner or whatever.
i just see it all as metal in one form or another.

Burning Witch has some scary shit going on. I'm not too into the whole Sunn drone thing though... thats bordering on the pretentious in my opinion.

Although that said, this Khanate video is some moody shit.
I could never listen to this sort of thing at home though.

thanks, matty, i'm gonna check these out.
i have a number of isis releases in itunes, but haven't given them much time.

part of what i like about the cult of luna is how well organized the tracks are individually and in relation to one another. i'm not a stoner, but i know what you mean - with 8to 12 minute songs, they have a long time to take the music different places. what i like is the they come back to earlier beats, but even more so, the way things get real quiet and mellow, then ramp way back up.

Cult of Luna was great to listen to on my 15 hour flight from LA to Hong Kong. I just got caught up in the music and lost track of time.

more: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0RzVpwfRVeo

as much as i like this band, and i dig hearing live versions of these tracks, i don't feel the need to watch a live dvd. i don't even know if i'd want to see 'em live. this shit is so heavy and so slow at the same time, i wouldn't know what to do. listening, i feel compelled to start running headlong into people, but i don't think the crowd would be too stoked. same thing happened first time i saw cradle of filth in the 90s. those black metal and goth peeps were not ready for nyhc dance stlyes!

Cult of Luna held my attention when I saw them. Everyone just stood there and watched them play. No real movement in the crowd. At one point Cult of Luna played a song that had to be longer than 10 minutes. After about a minute, the singer left the stage and the rest of the band did their thing. Then the singer came back for the last minute of the song. I had no idea what he was doing at first when he walked off of the stage. The singer of Dream Theater did that too when I saw them, but at least there were solos that sorta told you that the song wasn't even close to being done.
