Football hooligans

I've enjoyed a few good hooligan flicks today, but for the life of me I'll never understand it. Maybe it's because I'm not a sports fan, but I'll never understand fighting in the streets over a game, especially when firms fight before the game has even started. So much violence over a fucking game. Maybe some of our European brethern can explain it to me, but I just don't get it. I love the movies and songs about it though.

I don't really understand the mindset of it all, but it makes for some good films

When I was in London last week I saw a group of about 500 Chelsea fans singing at the top of their lungs: Chelsea!! Chelsea!! and there were cops everywhere. It was cool

Football Factory was grat too.
Rise of The footsoldier is fuckin great, so check that one out.

i only know what i know cause i have read alot of books about it
it seems to me that it has very little to do with the actual game itself
it is def. a where you grew up type of thing
who your dad supported, who is your local neighborhood team
its a sort of "gang" mentality
like "my teams crew is better than your teams crew" sort of thing
yeah they follow the game itself for sure but its seems to be sort of secondary to the crew stuff
like the crews are the main focus and the actual teams are sort of in the background

its really not that far removed from alot of american things
remove the sports element and its very much the same as alot of gang shit here
except a bit less extreme
no drive bys or drug turf type shit
neighborhood based stuff
i'm from here, you're from there.... let's fight type shit

you come at the king....you best not miss

it´s a kind of hometown pride thing.
my city/team is better than yours. in my area it is focused on football, you watch the matches and then you beat the shit out of each other. if you see you again at a show or in a bar, you talk to your "enemy", drink beer with them etc.
i know some hools who are for different teams that are best friends in real life, but if it´s football time they hate each other.
in other areas/ countries the situation is different. i think mattybar can tell you something about the london scene, which is quite extreme, i think.
if you look to the hooligans in eastern europe, croatia and serbia or poland and russia for example, there´s a complete new situation. there is everything about nationalism. the serbs hate the croatians and vice versa. there is football only the reason to meet the enemy and the fights are harder then everywhere else. they use weapons what a normal hooligan in germany wouldn´t do...

btw, there comes a second part of hooligans on dvd next month.

yeah basically it's fuck all to do with the game and more to do with just having a scrap.

its not something i ever embraced because the local team where i'm originally from are terrible and never get anywhere, let alone have a firm.
also, because that shit frankly scared the shit out of me when i was a kid haha!

there's a show you can watch on youtube called 'The Real Football Factories' starring the guy from Football Factory.
he's a bit of a dickhead but it's not a bad show.

i always find it funny how much fashion was a big part of it too.
it's never the guys rocking their team colours you need to worry about but the guys in the expensive casual clothes.

through the london hardcore scene's ties with the older london punk crowd, i know a handful of older guys who were very prevalent in the 1980s but on the whole i think things have quietened down in the uk a bit.

now eastern europe, italy, agentina etc... that shit is no fucking joke.
it's quite creepy how it's taken off in such an extreme fashion abroad.
as panzerkreuzer says above, in some countries it's on a whole other scale.

in the uk, as documented in stuff like Rise Of The Foot Soldier, it died down a lot when rave culture started becoming popular. to put it bluntly, everyone was too loved up on acid and ecstacy to fight each other.
it still exists these days but on a much smaller scale.
back in the 80s it was a huge. you couldn't avoid it, even if you weren't going near the football.
just getting on a train somewhere you'd know a game was on cos there'd be groups of dudes looking shady and police everywhere.

while it's not so much an issue here anymore, only a couple of years ago a mate of mine got cornered in a pub toilet purely because he was wearing a red shirt.
i knew something was up when not long before i'd gone for a piss and there was some dude racking up lines of coke in the stall with the door wide open. about half hour later , my boy comes back from the bathroom and says 'we have to leave now'.
basically, these two guys followed him into the bathroom and the exchange went like this...

-why have you got red on your arms?
-what do you mean?
-i mean i'm chelsea, and he's millwall so why the fuck do you have red on your arms?!
-it's just a red top mate. i'm arsenal but i ain't here for the football, just having a beer with my mates
-well that's lucky for you cos if you say arsenal one more time i'll knife you and your mates!

hahaha
we didn't stick about long after that

I.D. is unintentionally hilarious.

The Firm hasn't dated too well but it's definitely one of the best hooligan films.

I've said it before but it's hard work making a good hooligan film because there's not really a whole lot to talk about.
