Oi!

Hey guys, i got a question so maybe you can help. Lately, i've been listening to alot of the Business and i'm starting to get into them. I also want to get into some other oi bands. Should i try a compilation like "Oi: the album" or "Strength through oi"? So what do you guys suggest?

Entirely depends on what your into as far as what comps to get generally the Oi Oi meet me mates in the pub argy bargy stuff is on one set of comps and then there's several other directions. If you're into the Business style stuff I wouldn't know where to point you that stuff bores the hell out of me, but for American Oi anything on GMM or Headache records or the US of Oi comp is a good place to start.

There is too much bad oi out there. Stay away from the comps. Try these:

Blitz - Blitz Hits
Anti-Heros - American Pie
The Bruisers - Cruisin for a Bruisin
Those Unknown - s/t on TKO Records
Oxymoron - Fuck the 90's
The Templars - Omne Datum Optimum
The Business - The Truth, The Whole Truth and Nothing but the Truth

All of Marks suggestions are good. If you want to check out a good old-school comp I recommend 100% British Oi! from Captain Oi records. It fucking rules. The United States of Oi is also pretty good. As Jason mentioned, for American oi look to GMM Records and Headache Records are awesome.

For bands:

The 4-Skins
Tattooed Motherfuckers
Cock Sparrer
Cockney Rejects
Stormwatch
Barbed Wire
The Oppressed
Discipline
Badlands
Niblick Henbane
Condemned 84

I would be aware of the Templars, their albums sound like they were recorded in a bathroom, which always turned me off to them.

The Templars album I listed sounds pro though so you could try that one too if you're interested.

A lot of the classic British Oi bands I LOVED as a teenager don't really hold up so well all these years later. A few of them are incredibly good, most have a handful of songs that are rightful classics, but a ton of 'em are pretty much unlistenable. Here's a few that have stood the test of time for me, even if I maybe don't dig every single album by all of 'em...
Cocksparrer
Cockney Rejects
Angelic Upstarts
The Oppressed
The Business
Blitz
Menace
Most of those bands have all tried changing their sound at one time or another and it's been a pretty bad mistake for all of them. I say that as a warning because most of us have picked up an album or two from some of those bands and went "what the fuck is this shit" when we got it home. I highly recommend listening to a song or two from any album before you buy it, most of the time with those bands if you like the sound of one or two songs on any given album, you'll like the whole thing and the reverse is true as well.

I actually got into American Oi well after getting into the British stuff, but there's tons of really great bands from that scene too. Sadly, there's at least as many terrible bands, but here's a few favorites...
Bruisers
Anti-Heros
The Press
Templars (yeah, they have a sound that takes some getting used to, but it's all great stuff)
Those Unknown
Pressure Point
The Trouble (although they've always kinda fallen somewhere in between HC and Oi to me)
Wretched Ones
Niblick Henbane
Headwound
Limecell (again, not totally Oi in sound, but if you like that Headache Records Oi stuff, you'll like these guys too)
Stars & Stripes
Main Street Saints
and so on and so forth....

And even though pretty much everybody else advised staying away from the compilations, I think they're a great way to check out a lot of bands at once. Yeah, there's some terrible crap on some of 'em and a lot of them seem to have the same bands doing the same songs, but they helped me discover a ton of great shit. If you can find 'em for cheap I say go for it. The funny thing with the original Oi comps from England was that there really weren't all that many bands around when they were first putting those things out, so a lot of the bands on there were actually just made up names for the same bands or a few guys from bands fucking around in the studio so they could make it appear that there was a thriving scene developing. There was a lot of that kind of shit going on back then for whatever reason.
And then there's lots of British bands that weren't really Skinhead enough to get put in the Oi group but who still sound pretty close to it, but I won't get into all that now.

sound wise, they are more hardcore.....but I think maybe it's their lyrics that makes me lump them in with the oi bands.Listen to Songs like "We are the Blood" & "This ones for you".

US-based that weren't mentioned, but kick ass are Oxblood and Patriot (especially "We the people").

If you mention Tattooed Motherfuckers you shouldn't forget about their singer's side-projects, Distrubed Mother Fucker and Outclass (100% street rock, shit's awesome), great music minus WP bullshit.

Other European bands worth mentioning are Evil Conduct and Skinflicks. Very melodic.

Definitely checkout Red Alert-"We've Got the Power" reissued by Captain Oi!. Classic album that includes all their singles as bonus tracks. This is my favorite release from the early 80s UK Punk scene.

For US oi checkout Iron Cross(This band can take some getting used to as their recordings were brutally raw), Oxblood,
and U.S. Chaos.

Living a life kept shut by a dream,
I'm reaching out to grasp my reality.
Hands of time wrap tight around my neck, and hit me so hard,
leaving me eyes black.
staring at a ceiling,
wondering why i never left,
penning words in a notebook,
wondering why haven't slept.
sanity is tapping in a cell
inside my fucking head.
begging for redemption
after hearing what was said.
the nights, they will not sleep
cause the days, have played for keeps.
