I watched the Hated documentary, it was interesting. I thought it was weak that he kept going on about killing himself on stage, beating up a woman
who called him out on it, and then never offed himself live.
A lot of people ask me what kind of music I like. I love "soul music". My "soul music" isn’t a style, genre or niche. It’s music that is genuine. It’s
a painful lyric, a dirty bassline, it’s a harrowing vocal, it’s feedback, it’s an anthem, it’s a love song, it’s anarchy. I’ve got my personal
favourites but in the end it doesn’t matter who or where it comes from... so long as it’s good and it's real.

GG is totally take-it-or-leave-it. I can't see any in-between.
One one level, he was completely about pissing people off. So, he'd eat laxatives and throw shit on his audience... unless they asked for it, in
which case he wouldn't. While I think his death was an accident, it was the appropriate way to go out in this sense, since it's the exact opposite of
what was expected.
On a deeper level - and maybe I just read way too much into it - I think of GG as the ultimate example of American individualism (and I say that in a
negative way)... he was the perfect example of American ideals, yet the very same people who uphold these ideals hate him for doing it. I tend to
view this as his artistic statement about American values, and there's a lot to be learned from looking into this.
Beyond that, I think his lifestyle led him to feel totally isolated, which is something I think some people can connect with on a different level than
the two mentioned above. Check out his acoustic stuff, especially.
Basically, there's a hell of a lot going on there, and it's easy to get caught up on the (rather disgusting) superficial stuff. But hey, that's just
good art, right?
