Johnny Cash - Hurt

I'm nominating this song for the greatest cover song EVER. One of the best videos too.

regardless of the fact that Reznor wrote it, i just think Cash sung it with a lot more conviction than he did.

But yeah much prefer the Cash version to the NIN one.

Agreed to all.

One of the most grim songs I have ever heard in my life.
It found a way to become more mournful a few months later when Cash passed on.

I like a handfull of his older songs, but I can't think of a time I've ever been in the mood to listen to old men sing sad songs. I'm obviously in the minority here, because I think the original is alot better. Johnny's version sounds like it came off a convalescent home greatest hits comp.

I love Cash.....and his version of Hurt.
at the end of the video, when he closes the lid over the piano keys, it's creepy, almost like he knows his time has come.

Reznor can write.

Each aspect of the soul has it's own part to play, but the ideal is harmonious agreement with reason and control.

I've loved Johnny Cash since I was a kid, but it took me a long time to come around to this cover. I hate the original version as it has always sounded like whiney, self pitying bullshit to me and I really couldn't figure out why Cash would want to express that. After hearing it enough times I can see it from a different perspective from him and I've come to appreciate the sincerity and pain behind his version, but I still can't deal with the NIN version.

trent is a cunt, and this example goes to show how great Cash was...
he could take a whiney, self pitying bullshit song and turn it into something far more powerful and meaningful...

I dig the NIN version for sure... But Cash took that song, and did it as if it was his own heart that wrote it...

First time I heard Cash's version was also the first time I saw the video... The two together had me in tears as I watched it, and no video/song combo has ever made me do that before or since.
