book clubs or whatever they are called

My Grandma had always belonged to a place that she would get books delivered to her home. Like a CD club but for books. Thinking it might be a nice gift for my wife. Do they still exist and if so what are some of them called? What company does them where you sign and become a member and you get to choose the books every month or so?

Ya I found one just like that yesterday, but thought maybe someone on here was in one that had a good rep.

Honestly I think stuff like that has probably fallen by the wayside with the whole amazon/internet book thing.

I was a member of the Sci-Fi Book Club for a couple years. The main problem, IMO, with these clubs is that the quality of their paper, cover material and binding is lower than you would get from a standard publishing house. If you get a hardcover book at Borders it's going to be a standard size, while a book club's edition will be slightly smaller, lighter weight materials etc. If that doesn't matter to you, that's one thing, if it does... well, it's not worth the membership obligations. That's how I felt about SFBC. And, utlimately, I realized I can always get the standard editions for about the same price I was paying for the SFBC editions because Borders and B&N almost always have the books I'm after for 30-40% off when they first come out, and Amazon is reliably always 40% off with free shipping.

I get all my books on amazon for a penny used or at the used book store.
