Coffin display shelf I might be working on for a friend.
My friend hit me up to see about making a 4' tall coffin display case with shelves. This is what I mapped out for it so far in Google Sketchup. If
this is the size they go with it will be made with 9x1 pine boards.
Thoughts? I am thinking maybe a few more shelves but I am waiting to here back from the person that wants it.
I put that elevated bottom base because the person mentioned wanting a glass door on the front. Told them I could probably do plexi glass and was
thinking "The door wont be able to open due to the angle of the case" so I think this slight elevation should solve the problem.

Are you planning adding holes to fasten it to the wall? Because that would be a bit dangerous with books in it. Whats weird is that this is kind of a
cool idea that I have never heard of before. I'm surprised The Misfits haven't patented one yet. Jump on this XnM. Post pics when your done. I
especially like the detail on the bottom.

I will probably put something on the back in case they want to secure it to the wall. I found some sites selling similar cases for $1200... insane!
I am trying to figure out how I want to join the boards. I am a novice at best and have used screws so far, but I think I want to use somthing like
dowls and wood glue. Drill some holls slightly bigger than some dowl pieces and put some wood glue in the holes. I know there is a name for this
tecnique, but like I said, I am a novice and just kinda learn as I go. Stuff comes out good, so I guess i'm doing somthing right. 
I will definetly post pictures.

someone gave me a coffin a few years back similar to that and we turned it into a book case
we talked of making all kinds of cool furniture but somehow I got stuck making shirts instead.... I will get back into making them again as you can
make good money and the materials are cheap.
for the shelves go to a hardware store, and get the little movable self bracket kind that have the little rounded end.
then you only have to drill partially thru the wood and they can adjust the shelves to any height
we always wanted to try to figure out how to make it have a closing lid, but the physics at the time just didn't work out right.

Wow, I guess I'm out of it. I never heard of making a coffin as furniture. It sounds like it would be popular. Hey nMe? Do you have a table, miter or
reciprocating saw?

I have a friend with a table saw which will probably be the best for this so I will go to his house or bring it to mine. All I have is a
reciprocating saw, jig saw, small circular saw, drill, and power sander. I can do a bit of damage with just that stuff though...
This was my biggest project. I had a weird triangle space in my master BR (it is above the negative space above the stairwell) so I made this
bookcase / shelf unit to put into it and finished it off with some trim.

That bookshelf you already made is rad. The stain looks sweet against that blue color. How did you do the front? Did you route that or is that a
molding? Again, very nice job.

it is just molding. I had the big opening in the wall and put molding around the shelf to hide the seams.

oh... so the molding of that shelf is at about the same level as the thermostat? I thought it was a modern looking triangle shelf hanging on the wall.
Its actually inset in to the wall/open space? thats even cooler!

Thanks! We got the house and it was just a weird open space. This is the 2nd floor and the stairwell is right below it. Most houses would just have
the space sealed in as unused negative space but it was a big open, ugly, and useless triangular space. Figured this was the best thing to do with
it.

that's cool man, an old roommate at the house I live at started to build one but abandoned it on our back deck, I was tempted to finish it but he was
using shitty lumber so I've had the idea in the back of my head to just design my own. Building stuff is awesome

there is a company in Albany called Carried Away Coffins..ran by the guitar player from the old Albany band Wolfpack..he does these coffin
shelves..bookcases etc....really crafted nicely.....on facebook etc....
