Akira Kurosawa

Any fans? I've heard the name many times over the years, but I've never checked out any of his movies. Any recommendations?

Um...holy christ. You've never seen Seven Samurai? Stop whatever you're doing and rent that thing now. Then promptly watch the rest of his entire catalogue.

Start with Seven Samurai for sure....then watch Yojimbo, then Sanjuro....lesser known favorites of mine are Dersu Uzala and Stray Dog.

Also, if you like the Samurai genre, check out all of the Zatoichi films (not the remake).....they aren't as "heavy" as the Kurosawa samurai tales...but equally as good.

Hope you enjoy them.

while we are at it......might as well watch all of the Lone Wolf and Cub movies.....then get into the Zatoichi TV series.

I could watch Japanese films all day long.

not Kurosawa films but worth checking:

Revenge (not the Kevin Costner jawn)
Festival of Swordsmen
Shinobi no Mono
The Sleepy Eyes of Death Triology

I'm always looking for new, or in this case old, stuff to check out.

Check out the Hidden Fortress. It's an inspiration for Star Wars. In fact, the bumbling peasants in that film were the inspiration for C3P0 and R2D2.
