Why does so much good shit come from Boston?

Unbelievable. My roommates and I drove the 4 hours down to Albuquerque yesterday to see Darkbuster play a free show and it was fucking GREAT! I've been diggin' this band for quite some time, but never had a chance to see 'em before and the live show takes my love of them to new heights. If you don't know 'em yet, I HIGHLY recommend you rectify that situation ASAP. Go check 'em out on myspace at http://www.myspace.com/darkbuster and then go see 'em play on the Boston Invasion tour (with Dropkick Murphys, fuckin' Gang Green, and Lost City Angels) that starts in a couple days, you won't regret it.

On a related note, what the fuck is it about Boston that makes so many amazing bands form there? Seriously, since I was in High School so many of my favorite bands have been from Boston. Bands from tons of different subgenres too, whether it's Hard Core, Punk, Street Rock, whatever it is that King Of Nuthin' play...it just keeps comin'. One day I gotta get out there.

I think the reason is becuase it stays cold for a long time there and it's one of the only Common Wealths left in the country. Two big reasons to get pissed and sing or scream about it:) I personally (and Gabe will like this) have spent more than half of my life between Maine and Mass and I love the music scene, but I must say Texas is where the best music is coming from for me personally, everytime I find a new band I fall in love with, they are from texas. Go figure, I'm a transplanted son of the South yeeeeeehaaaah!!!!:P

Oh, I'm from Austin, so I know all about the glory that is TEXAS, but seriously way too much of my collection is Boston bands.

By the way, to the powers that be at Thorp, you really should jump on Darkbuster and sign 'em up.

the murders, the terror
they\'ve done it forever

I dunno, right now it says you're listenin' to Ducky Boys, I love those guys. If you've got any sense, you like Slapshot, I've loved that band since I first heard them like 18 years ago. Here's an idea, since this is my thread anyway, it now has two, no, three purposes.
1. Talk about how great Darkbuster are and get Thorp to sign 'em.
2. Talk about what makes so many Boston bands so good.
3. List your favorite bands from Boston.

On that note, here's a list off the top of my head...
Darkbuster
Dropkick Murphys
Ducky Boys
Slapshot
Kings Of Nuthin'
Jerry's Kids
FU's
Gang Green
DYS
SS Decontrol
The Trouble
The Freeze
Last Rights
Negative FX
Stranglehold
The Proletariat
(old) Mighty Mighty Bosstones
and I'm sure I'm forgetting a ton.

Sam Black Church
454 Big Block
Blood for Blood
Sinners and Saints
Ramallah
Diecast (old stuff)
StompBox
Honkyball
Stars and Stripes
There are alot of bands from other areas in Mass, not necessarily Boston, but they rule all the same.

They were the obvious ones, so you just assumed we all knew you were including them, I understand, it's like without thinking with those bands

Out Cold are great, I thought of The Bruisers, but since they aren't really from Boston(or even Massachusetts), I didn't list 'em. Wrecking Crew I liked OK, but haven't listened to 'em in a good ten years or so, so I left 'em off. And in the immortal words of Darkbuster, "I Hate The Unseen".....

Some of the Bruisers are from Mass. I think they were a Portsmouth, NH/Newburyport MA band.

Darkbuster release their own CD's. I'm pretty sure they won't sign to a label unless its Epitaph or something. Selling 1000 CD's on your own label with minimal investment can be pretty profitable. Probably more profitable than selling 5000+ on a solid indie.

I don't think Boston is half as good now as it used to be. When we started 10 years ago we had Showcase Showdown, Dropkick Murphys, The Bruisers, The Trouble, The Unseen, Blood for Blood, 30 Seconds Over Tokyo, Pinkerton Thugs. .... those were my favorite days of the Boston scene. Since then I've been into The Shods, Darkbuster, Jake Brennan and the Confidence Men, The Vigilantes, The USM, Kings of Nuthin, Elgin James and the Suicide Gang, The Blue Bloods, The Explosion and a few more. I feel like people get unintentionally competitive when there are a lot other good bands. You gotta be able to stand out and sometimes that means you need to get better. You can't stand out by looking cute in this city because there are a lot of good bands that will chump you with their music so you gotta be on your A game.

That being said, I rarely go to a show around here unless it's multiple good bands on one show. I guess I take it for granted.

You should check out Shanghai Valentine if you're interested in up and coming Boston bands. They got an EP available at Interpunk.

I love Showcase Showdown (too bad they split up) and The Pinkerton Thugs (although I thought they were from Maine), as well as The Vigilantes (what happened to them? It seems like they were blowin' up and then they just disappeared) too.

The Vigilantes broke up. Jasper was singing for the Virus. Pat is in the Unseen now. Jeff is in a band called The Exit who just signed to Epic. They sound like the Police or something. Expect them to be huge.

Thanks, that was always weird to me, how they just disappeared right when they were gettin' well known.
