Stupid 'what constitues breaking edge' question...

This isnt ment to be super serious, but Im curious about what peoples opinions will be just because its kind of a funny and ironic hypothetical situation....

I know that sometimes people debate about medacine in straight edge. I think if someone is sick they should take the medacine to get better. I take cholesterol medacine and I dont consider it a strike against calling myself straight edge. I tried to change my diet and that didnt help. High cholesterol just runs in my family and the once a day pill helps. Anyway.... what about this for a hypothetical......

A straight edge cancer patient that is perscribed MEDACINAL MARIJUANA for nausea and other symptoms of the cancer and cancer treatments. Is using the medacine breaking edge?

Does it make a difference if the perscription is for Marijuana to be smoked or Marijuana in pill form?

I know its stupid... but Im bored!!!

I have to agree with Juan, I know people who have gone through Chemotherapy, and trust me, even the most die hard of straight edgers would take whatever the doctor told them would work to make that pain and sickness subside.

being edge can mean so many different things to so many different people, so I dont think there's one answer to the question of "what constitutes breaking edge?" I mean... it's not a law. There's no clear definition of straight edge that everyone can agree on. It was a song about a way that someone chose to live his life and people took it to the extreme.

edit:
to add to this... did anyone buy/read that Schism book that B9 put out? I read it cover to cover and it was interesting to see how the guys in Gorilla Biscuits defined sxe... at least at one point in time. They explained that they believed that straight edge was abstenance from any sort of obsession, so say you obsess over masturbation..... then you're not edge. Wacky shit. Made me glad I dont claim edge.

i am not staright edge and never was, so my thoughts on this are just do whatever you want.

i think that people who are real sXe do it for their own peace of mind,
and not it impress other people.

therefor if i time comes when you have to make a choice like this,
i think do what you feel is right for you.

Straight Edge is a commitment to YOURSELF....fuck what anyone else thinks.
You make your own choices of what you feel is right for you....and let others do the same for themselves.....there shouldn't be any set of rules to follow.

but fuck it,whatever, I'm drunk...time for another New Castle. Cheers.

I'm also not straight edge, but would like to say that I think that people who are and don't eat anything cooked in alcohol (i.e. chicken marsala) is ridiculous. I've had people who are straight edge agree with me on this. It doesn't make sense considering the alcohol is cooked out anyway.

Not at all Honus........I just brought it up to help make my point. I wasnt offended at all. But I do believe in that situation anyone would set aside any self principles they have to help make their lives a little less painfull. The marijuana is to help ease the nasuea that comes with chemo, it also helps increase the appetite, so you can actually eat from time to time without tossin it back up, it works too, I've seen it first hand. They should prescribe it alot more. I don't smoke the shit.........anymore, but would if I was going through that kind of treatment.

Its called Marinol, its synthetic thc. Most people that it is targted at can't handle it though because the high is extremely intense since its being digested and alot of times it just gets puked up. Pretty much everyone in my mom's family gets cancer, and my moms got it twice in two years (that was a bitch!) so I've read alot about stuff like Marinol. In Canada they have a cannabis mouth spray called Savitex for multiple sclerosis, they are going to be testing that in the U.S. soon. My grandmother was offered a marjiuana prescription during her cancer but turned it down because her interpretation of a bible scripture led her to believe that it was giving up control of your mind.

Do what thou wilt shall be the whole of the law...

Spend some time with people that are REALLY fucking sick and you begin to realize just how trivial straight edge, hardcore, music, etc are.

I think this is a real interesting thread.... perspectives of straight edge from people who aren't is cool. It just gets up my craw when people are dicks about straight edgers because of straight edgers that were dicks about it.

Anyways... I find that defining myself by a label/idea made up by a few nerds from Washington DC is really limiting. I've kind of thought so for a while now. It serves it's purpose within the realm of hardcore and punk rock, but it certainly is not the defining principle of my life. "Straight edge" just is what I've always been, I suppose, as I've never done anything. There are some that would say you've broken edge by taking an ibuprofen, or using an medicinal herbal tonic mixed in alcohol. When it comes to serious illness... to hell with straight edge and the judgements of little teenage pricks and the handful of clowns that have lasted into their 30s but can't evolve their minds to not be judgemental assholes.

If straight edge is simply doing what you can do to live healthy & free of altering substances, then smoking dope for glaucoma or something should be fine haha. You are doing something that is medicinal to help you because you're in pain.

Anything, even drugs, used to make you better should be fine for edge. If you have a chronic or terminal illness, who would give a shit anyways?

A lot of people ask me what kind of music I like. I love "soul music". My "soul music" isn’t a style, genre or niche. It’s music that is genuine. It’s a painful lyric, a dirty bassline, it’s a harrowing vocal, it’s feedback, it’s an anthem, it’s a love song, it’s anarchy. I’ve got my personal favourites but in the end it doesn’t matter who or where it comes from... so long as it’s good and it's real.

Cancer is a horrible monster.
I think anything you can take to make the pain stop is okay with me.
That is all.
