Besides Hardcore

Some people seem to think that in order to be in the scene the only thing you can listen to is Hardcore. Although I admit to Hardcore being primarily what I listen to, I also listen to jazz and reggae as other primary sounds on my stereo. What else do you listen to and why?

I listen to some metal. Some pop punk stuff. I dunno.... like I grew up listening to the "easy listening" station because that's what my parents listen to, so I like some of that stuff too. I dont listen to it regularly, but if Im tired of my cds and Im on a long drive I change it to some station that plays cheesy love songs and shit.

My girlfriend likes some more girly music, so she got me to listen to some of that stuff on occasion. I found myself listening to Liz Phair while I was by myself, and I really liked it. I cant really get into Ani DiFranco much though. Her style is a bit too frantic for me, but my girlfriend listens to older folk stuff and she's slowly trying to turn me onto it as well.

I need some softer stuff to listen to at work. There's only so much Blood for Blood or Megadeth they can take, and Ive listened to Sunny Day Real Estate and The Fire Theft too often here.

direct/pure stuff is maybe my informal guidance. So I can't grasp over-commercialised sounds as they sound waterdowned and soulless.

So besides HC and streetpunk (Dropkick M, FFF, Ducky Boys,...) I dig Bruce Springsteen, Pogues, jazz, Anouk (Dutch uncompromising chick), Pearl Jam,..

Have also "problems" with many new HC bands as they wanna sound hard for image sake (why does a vast majority of 'em want a vocalist to sound death metal-ish?) and certainly too much metal influence. The Merauder, AoM,... metal-core style is OK, but if ya go towards Hatebreed,... then it's kind of passed the core.

I was discussing with someone about that (metal in hardcore) the other day... Alf from The Fire Still Burns. I was on the side of anything with a chug in the guitar is getting the HXC branding lately. True to roots/self HXC is out there its the same as it ever was, you gotta dig. But like sars said, oldies has good stuff too. Like The Animals, "please dont let me be misunderstood". Thats just a heavy freaken song. Or The Rolling Stones "gimme shelter" another heavy hitting track.

haha ^

Other than diggin some metal...
I like some oldschool hiphop and some mainstream shit. Musically not at all, I don't feel it like that. And mostly I don't agree with the subject matter.
This sounds funny, I go from some Hazen St. to Death Before Dishonor to Ignite to Back of Tha Neck. Then I listen to some Saud Keita (African Music) and Celtic music.
I also sometimes go back to the old punk I was into.

And Bob Marley is the only real reggae! WEERD

Hardcore/punk/oi are the bulk of what I listen to but I also like some metal and death metal but mostly older shit. I love old 50's rock and roll and 60's motown. I like celtic music, pipe and drum corps, jazz, classical, and though my friends claim she's evil I love Enya.

most people grow out of that idea in their 20s, some don't. seems pretty ridiculous to me at this point in my life. the majority of new punk and hardcore pretty much blends together for me. there are obviously exceptions of course. theres 4000 bands trying to sound like gorilla biscuits or chain of strength or the business or the descendents or the ramones or.......well you get the picture. a very small percentage of those rise above (were gonna rise above!;)) bein a generic clone and stand out as a great band. i think when you start to realize that fact you also realize theres been a lot of great music recorded in the last 100 years. ignoring something because it doesnt fit into the 2 genres of music you listen to made sense to me when i was 15, after 27 years of life it seems retarted. i still do, however, retain the belief that commercial radio contains 99% garbage. i listen to alot of blues, OLD country (dont even get me started on how much the majority of new country is a pile of shit), bluegrass (hardcore 45 yrs before the term existed), ska-rocksteady-reggae, celtic, soul, rockabilly as well as punk/hardcore/oi! and anything else that catches my ear. and i wouldnt have it any other way.

The very existence of flamethrowers proves that sometime, somewhere, someone said to themselves, ?You know, I want to set those people over there on fire, but I?m just not close enough to get the job done.? George Carlin

besides hardcore (not metalcore) i listen to a lot of space and prog rock type stuff (failure, yes, mars volta, cave in, pink floyd, radiohead, year of the rabbit, etc...). lately i've been listening to a lot of jeff buckley and syd barrett. then of course heavy amounts of talk radio and the henry rollins cd "get in the van".
