Also, I use the 'snap' feature every day. Under the 'View' Menu, make sure you have 'Snap' enabled. Then when you select something (ctrl-a for the
entire canvas or ctrl-a-uparrow-downarrow for an item on a layer) and drag the guides out from the rule, the guide will snap to the edge and center
(vertical or horizontal) of whatever it is you have selected.

You can also do it in illustrator, but you'd have to import the images. There's an align option where you can align the tops, bottoms, centers, and
left and right sides of the images. It works good if you're doing text and stuff in Illustrator, but is probably too intensive for just messing
around.
