After many months of intense negotiations, I am proud to announce that Boston's legendary punk rock club, The Rat, will be reopening! I have partnered
with an individual who wishes to remain anonymous at this point, but had intimate involvement in the 70s and 80s Boston music scene as a
musician, producer and studio owner-this person will provide the bulk of the finanical backing for this venture and I'll be handling management and
booking functions.
A bit of background. some months back, I approached former Rat owner Jim Harold with a proposition to purchase the rights to the Rat name and logo
and, after a brief period, was able to reach a financial agreement amenable to both parties. The next step was to find the venue itself, preferably in
proximity to the club's original location and in keeping with the subterranean ambiance. We needed to look no further than across the street, to the
building on the corner of Beacon and Brookline, where Pizzeria Uno is currently situated. The basement of that building has a historical link to
Boston's music scene, serving as the location for the legendary Radiobeat studio in the late 70s and early 80s and, briefly, the Storyville rock club,
also in the early 80s. The space formerly occupied by Storyville became vacant and we were able to reach an agreement with the building's owner to
lease the space.
The room itself will hold approximately 500 people-a bit larger than the former Rat's capacity, but a little smaller than the downstairs room at the
Middle East. It will feature a full bar and food will be served during the daytime hours. James Ryan, who operated the Hoodoo Barbecue at the old Rat,
will be returning as head cook.
So when will this all be happening? If everything goes as scheduled, we hope to have the club open and running by Labor Day weekend. In addition to
regular 18 plus shows, there will be all-ages matinees every weekend. The grand opening is still in the planning stages, but we're proud to announce
that the first all-ages show will feature a rare appearance by Boston legends Slap Shot, plus reunion appearances by The Trouble, Wrecking Crew and
special guests from Washington DC and Boston who I can't divulge at this point.
This is all very exciting and overwhelming. The months ahead will undoubtedly be challenging, but we're confident it will all be worthwhile in the
long run.
