Shirt question (defstarsteve)

both....
most so called artist send over 72 dpi jpegs and expect miracles
but the art should be either vector or sent at 300 dpi to full scale....
this will keep the dots clean...
as for the shop that printed them it depends on their output device, exposure unit and then the screen mesh they choose to use...
I will post some pics of shirts we have done recently that will make you go huh? how the hell did you do that...

people's acceptance of 72dpi resolution in print design is as maddening to me as 128kbps mp3 sound quality. honestly, either is unacceptable.

If I fail math, there goes my chance at a good job and a happy life full of hard work.

this is an improved version of the art sent to me by the customer, it was72dpi crap and this is after I went in and cleaned it up

at the time only had our 4 color press
so I had to figure the best way to do get as much in as I could...
please forgive the following pics as my digital camera at the time was a piece of crap...

full shirt

closer detail

close up on the face

like I said 4 colors simulated process: red, maroon, yellow, white

one of my first attempts at simulated and if I get a reorder I am going to redo the art as we have moved almost completly away from half tones to indexed dots, but more on those later

okay next up is a 10 color
but this one was not so good in my opinion
we didn't quite have a handle on our dota on this one...
this job took 3 days to burn and about 30 attempts on the screens...

there were 2 version of this shirt and the only thing I really liked about them was the money in his hand from the other version

okay so this is it, probably the best thing we have ever printed, and if I could do it again I would....
10 screens but ended up being 15 colors total
al lthe screens burtn 1st try and set up in about an hour, vs. the 3 days it took me on the other job,
we got better emulsion that is designed for our light source, and we are also using indexed seperations and not halftones....

that last one is off the hook! roughly, how much more expensive is it to have a 10 color design printed than a 4?

thanks
the differance between 10 colors and 4 color prints
100 4 color prints are 5.75 all inclusive
100 10 color prints are 7.25 all inclusive

at jaks prints or contagious they would be about 8.50 a shirt

I wont print 10 colors on less then 100 not worth my time
but basically a quarter more a color...
once we go full auto next year that will proabably drop since the process can be done much faster and easier

the above print took 4 hours 15 total prints on 100 shirts...
do the math....1500 prints, 375 prints an hour

on an auto would have taken about 30 minuts....
damn my broke no credit having ass

GF is basically just a scaling app, but it's algorithms kick ass. It works as a "save as" type plug-in for photoshop that allows you to increase an image's resolution by up to 1000%.

Steve,
Question. I need shirts done by the 14th for a show. I figured you wouldn't be able to get them done in time and considering its only a 25 run to start off with I'm going to a local shop . I was wondering what way should I save the file onto CD-R. I know it needs to be EPS vector but should it be EPS 1.0 EPS 2.0 or just Photoshop EPS and then after that what are the other specs like TIFF 1bit/pixel or 8bit/pixel and then include color transfer function?

Thanks very much in advance.

you should have asked me, the 14th isn't out of the question...

but I don't deal with .eps that often, if you are saving from illustrator I save them as .ai files....
everyone is different though

best person to ask is the printer you are planning on going to since they know what programs they use...
