Irish marriage breakdowns jump fivefold in 20 years, report says

DUBLIN (AFP) - There has been a fivefold increase in marital breakdown in Ireland in the last 20 years, according to a new study released Friday.

The Iona Institute, an organisation dedicated to the strengthening of society through marriage and religious practice, said that by 2006, 200,000 people had seen their marriage fail, compared with 40,000 in 1986.

The report said that Ireland, which has prospered under the Celtic Tiger boom in recent years, had experienced deep economic and social changes over the last decade.

"One of the biggest changes has occurred in the family," it said.

"Until fairly recently, the vast majority of children were born and raised inside intact marriages.

"Today, a clear majority of children are still raised in the family based on marriage, but a growing number are being raised by lone parents or by cohabiting parents.

"In addition, marriage breakdown in Ireland is increasing fast."

Divorce only became legal in mainly Roman Catholic Ireland a decade ago after a lengthy and divisive campaign.

The report added that there had been an 80 percent increase in the number of single parent families since 1986 to 190,000.

One in four children is being raised in families where the parents are not married, the study said, a figure which comes close to levels in Britain and the United States.

If I fail math, there goes my chance at a good job and a happy life full of hard work.

I'd say that goes a long way towards explaining why there's now more of it than there was 20 years ago. There may be more divorces now, but I'd be willing to wager that there's also a lot fewer abusive, dysfunctional or unhappy households than there was 20 years ago.

No shit, a one hour ceremony somehow validates the rest of your life?

Well, its this place where nobody works, and the pigs don\'t give you any shit. Everyone smokes weed and gets drunk all day. Its a place where cunts like me and you can truly take it easy and relax. Know what I mean?

I've noticed it over here, Loads and loads of couples and families splitting up and getting divorced.

I remember reading something about this back in 1994. It was more of a prediction of sorts and ti seeems to be panning out. That sucks. Denis Leary even did a comedy scetch on this in 1997 for the LOCK AND LOAD shows.

Each aspect of the soul has it's own part to play, but the ideal is harmonious agreement with reason and control.

Its our instant gratification culture, if people don't get what they want instantly they walk. No one is willing to work hard for anything anymore.

Lazy bastards, the lot of 'em. Thing is... I'm guessing alot of people start to bail after kids come into the picture. Sex life starts to slow down a bit, things aren't the same as they used to be etc so people get fed up.

Calls into question their entire reasoning for getting married AND how much they've actually developed their personalities during the course of the marriage. If marriage ain't transforming you, there's a problem.
