Nine Inch Nails splits with label, goes rogue
Nine Inch Nails has parted ways with their label. The band has proven a thorn in the side of their major label for the past few years, leaking their
own material, publicly admonishing them and encouraging fans to download their records. Frontman/mastermind Trent Reznor made the announcement today:
I've waited a LONG time to be able to make the following announcement: as of right now Nine Inch Nails is a totally free agent, free of any
recording contract with any label.
I have been under recording contracts for 18 years and have watched the business radically mutate from one thing to something inherently very
different and it gives me great pleasure to be able to finally have a direct relationship with the audience as I see fit and appropriate. Look for
some announcements in the near future regarding 2008. Exciting times, indeed.
Just last week, another band of similar stature decided to take the free agent "direct relationship" route. Radiohead opted to release their new
record directly. With these high profile bands taking the independent route, it remains to be seen what kind of influence they will have on the music
industry as a whole.
If I fail math, there goes my chance at a good job and a happy life full of hard work.

That is awesome. Seriously, when you are THAT well known, there isn't much a label can do for you as long as you are "business headed". That goes 10
fold in this day and age where anyone can get things released in stores with enough push, and the internet being the easiest way to distribute /
promote. Does anyone even listen to the radio or watch MTV for musical ideas anymore? Nope. Mtv doesn't play videos anyway and I can't think of the
last thing I have heard on the radio and went "Wow, this sounds good." I'm gonna stop now before I get off track.
Plain and simple, the music game is a much different "playing field" nowadays.

This is very interesting. The prices on the cd's were changed to 16.99 at BEST BUY and the local record exchange.
they were $9.99 for a while and that was in correlation with his boycott. Now that he is off the label now they are charging a high price.

i dont mind NIN and its great to see that more and more bands are leaving the old label formula. but you gotta remember that these bands already have
a huge name, going rogue can only work for them. For an up and coming band, getting good label backing can seriously raise profile. Thats not to say
that its the be all end all, theres plenty a band can do for themselves in particular with hardcore and punk bands as they dont really register with
joe public anyway. but for a "rock" band or pop or whatever, even metal a good label behind you can work wonders.

That Johnny Cash version of "Hurt" kicks mucho ass.

Trent. Also the NIN version is good.

I'm man enough to admit, the first time I saw the video of 'hurt' by Johnny Cash I cried. That hit me deep in the soul. To see this elder man with so
many miles in his life looking back, with the quiver in his voice. The images, his voice, yep that video made me break.
