Sorry I should of discarded them from the list. I don't think I ever heard them and think I got them confused with someone else. But, as far as
Madball goes, and this is all IMHO, they crossed over many years ago. I always thought they where teetering over that metal edge and then they
started tuning down their guitars and just playing two step mosh after two step mosh with way too much double bass pedal and to me that's pretty much
metal.Spoiler - 3-17-2008 at 07:05 PM
So it's just now being released on DVD ? I bought the VHS back around 1999 or 2000 when it was first released.Jason the Magnificent - 3-19-2008 at 12:53 PM
I'd be interested to know what non-metal bands would have fit the title better during that era?XHonusWagnerX - 3-19-2008 at 01:18 PM
Im curious, but Im not a fan of many of those bands so I dont know if Ill get it or not. Depends how much it is in stores most likely.
I would be way into a BOSTON HC video like that.BKT - 3-19-2008 at 01:19 PM

No that is not metal. Last time I heard Iron Maiden, Slayer, Deicide, Carcass, and or War-bringer were much more than this. They are metal, Madball
compared to them is worthless rubbish.
MM.Jason the Magnificent - 3-19-2008 at 01:21 PM
It was a good video even if your not a big fan of those bands, the live footage is really professional and the interviews are pretty loose/funny. PLus
the Krishna dude with the bird poop smeared on his nose for shiva is pretty amusing.XHonusWagnerX - 3-19-2008 at 01:27 PM
I would have liked to see it feature...
Agnostic Front
Murphys Law
Sick of it All
Bad Brains
Cro-Mags (or at least J.J. or Harley)
Biohazard
Pete Steel (talking about Carnivore)
Beastie Boys (at least Adam Yaught)
Maybe even dig up some of the "retired" guys for some intereviews...

Yes, down tuned guitars + constant 2-step breakdowns + Over use of double bass pedal = METAL. It's basic music theory. Lyrics are not the only thing
that make a band HC and just cause a band plays shows with HC bands doesn't make them HC.BKT - 3-19-2008 at 02:35 PM
No that does not equal metal.
MM.MikeFromInhuman - 3-19-2008 at 03:29 PM
You know, why wasn't SOIA on it??? It was filmed in 1994/1995 ( right?) and at that point SOIA were by far the biggest NYHC band.
Perhaps it wanted to focus on newer (at the time) bands.Discipline - 3-19-2008 at 04:00 PM
Plus SOIA was on a major label, which would have been a problem getting the rights to use their music.MikeCore - 3-19-2008 at 04:50 PM

Well you don't have to pigeon-hole it if you don't want to but they aren't playing HC. You can call it Crossover if you want. What ever floats your
boat.Jason the Magnificent - 3-19-2008 at 04:57 PM

You still haven't answered what bands from this era would better define HC than those presented.MikeCore - 3-19-2008 at 08:22 PM

Hmmm....What year did this doc originally come out?Discipline - 3-19-2008 at 09:08 PM
96-97 I think.MikeCore - 3-19-2008 at 10:46 PM

I would have to go with these:
Warzone
Mouthpiece
Hands Tied
Time Flies
In My Eyes
Speak 714
Ignite (A rock band nowadays)
The Killing Flame (A rock band nowadays)
Slapshot
Ten Yard Fight
Cornerstone
SOIA (They may have crossed over by this time)
Burn
Underdog
One Life Crew (They where crossing over at this point)
I'm sure there are more but I can't remember. I wasn't all that active in HC by that point. And as far as NYC goes there wasn't much going on there
at that point except Warzone/Underdog/Burn and LOTS of fake metal.Jason the Magnificent - 3-20-2008 at 05:16 AM
Half those bands aren't even from NY? We're talking about NYHC right?
OLC never crossed over, American Justice may have had a bunch of silly skits and dumb shit on it but it was in no way any more metal that CRS,
arguably it could be considered less metal with the PB2K, Confront and Meanstreak covers.JawnDiablo - 3-20-2008 at 06:26 AM
Sheer Terror was at the end of their run, and may not have completley fit the group of bands on it, but i think they should have been on there for
obvious reasons....wait what year was this released? was it after 98?XHonusWagnerX - 3-20-2008 at 08:58 AM
I still think that MURPHYS LAW is one of the seminol NYHC bands and they should be involved in everything!Jason the Magnificent - 3-20-2008 at 09:24 AM
They actually were filmed for that but I guess it was Jimmys bday and cake and beer were flying everywhere, there were camera issues and it never made
the cut on the VHS, be interesting to see if any of that made it to the DVD.MyOwnWay - 3-20-2008 at 10:37 AM

That sounds like it would be the hilight of the movie, even if there was only pieces of it because of camera issues!Jason the Magnificent - 3-20-2008 at 12:23 PM

Crossing over to a more metalic sound. Like tuning down the guitars and/or slowing down the songs.MikeCore - 3-20-2008 at 12:59 PM

I know most of the bands I listed are not from NYC but I explained that at the end of my post. From what I can remember there wasn't much going on
there HC wise at that time. And OLC started to take a little too much liberty with there sound by the time the Reality Check demo came out non the
less American Justice. I am not saying I didn't like the record I just was less then impressed with the 'balance' of the songs as compared to CRS.XHonusWagnerX - 3-20-2008 at 01:13 PM
I like the American Justice better than any of the other OLC stuff because its so silly...

The point being there wasn't a better overall representation of NYHC as an entity during that time on a whole, than those presented in the
video...regardless of their state of metalness.
You can nitpick and say that no bands past '84 should technically be on there then... but NYHC as it's known by most is more broadly accepted as the
'88 and up bands who started incorporating more metallic elements into their sound. Frankly, for the most parts those bands are just better. I'll take
Judge or Leeway over the Mob anyday and both of those bands are more metal than most on that video.MikeCore - 3-20-2008 at 03:59 PM

I'm one of those who like the '88 and up style of HC and I thought people would pick up on that by the list that I posted. The list of bands in the
video are WAY more metal then Judge. Judge to me is perfect blend of Street Punk + Thrash which IMHO = perfect hardcore. The bands in the doc mostly
just play down tuned down sludge metal with some scarce punk elements. I'm not really nitpicking I just wish people would call the music what it is
and not what they want it to be. I'm just an opinionated jerk anyway Jason the Magnificent - 3-20-2008 at 05:05 PM

Thrash like what? I know they don't sound like street punk but I'm curious what this mysterious entitiy of thrash may be that makes this so.MikeCore - 3-20-2008 at 11:03 PM

You're telling me you don't hear Street Punk in hardcore? When HC first started you had bands like Minor Threat listening to street punk bands(Sex
pistols, Ramones, etc) and Thrash bands like Motorhead and then combining those two styles together to get hardcore. As the 80's went on and HC was
passed down to younger generations Street Punk and Thrash/Metal became more aggressive as did hardcore(YOT, Judge, COS, SOIA, Agnostic Front, Warzone,
etc) but unfortunately by the early 90's most younger bands and some older bands got bored with traditional, true to it's roots, hardcore and starting
tuning down the guitars, slowing down the songs and practically just growling vocals that where completely unintelligible. OK...time to go get
stoned. Jason the Magnificent - 3-20-2008 at 11:16 PM
Just because some hardcore has streetpunk influence does not mean a sxe metal band (judge by their own admission) sounds like streetpunk. Thats just
science.MikeCore - 3-21-2008 at 02:37 AM

Well, I hear A LOT of street punk + Thrash/Metal in most of the hardcore I listen to especially every HC band that Porcell is in. I didn't say it
sounded like Street Punk I said it sounds like Hardcore to me with certain obvious influences. And yes, Metal being one.Jason the Magnificent - 3-21-2008 at 06:14 AM
